I a lefty but right-eyed, focus with *, just like commons.
Imo, camera is built since long ago with right handed shutter button. The market for the lefty shutter button is not 10 percent as about half lefty able to suit to the right hand shutter in no time. U want a system change for your sake? It is Impossible to me.

As the problem is left-eye in VF, try adapt to the right even it is very difficult.
Most(90%) Pro shoot with right eye, it ables you to keep you aware of surroundings while shooting n no disturbance when changing settings with eye on the VF.

try it man. dont give up.

After reading about the merits of using separate buttons for AE/AF I decided to give it a try....discovered though that it won't work for me cos I use my left eye on the viewfinder and my thumb (when not using the thumbwheel) usually supports my cheekbone for stability. Ergo, it's hard to use my thumb to AF. Any left handers experience this?

I am left-eye dominant and use my left eye to look through the viewfinder. I also use the "*" to focus, without any problems.

i'm left everything...don't think i'll ever get used to using my non master eye on the viewfinder. Stoopid right handed world vmad

*shake left fist*

I *think* that if you are left handed, you should be right eye'ed and vice versa. Isn't it called cross dominant when you are left handed and left eyed (and vice versa)?

If the southpaws get a petition going we may sway manufacturers to issue left handed versions of their popular SLRs...after all we make up, what, 10% of the market? ;)

Even if the camera makers would consider it (very doubtful) there would have to be a huge premium and your resale market would shrink significantly. I'm left-handed, but have always used my right eye for photography.

If we consider POTN typical of the best photographers (and why wouldn't we?) we're more than that. Someone had a poll up recently and IIRC, the percentage of lefties was more like 30%. But I'm not desperate enough for a left-handed camera to revert to an Exacta>

I'm LH/LE and I think if a they made a lefty camera I'd be lost. I bought a LH shotgun and ended up exchanging it for a RH version cause I'm use to living in a RH world.

Didn't somebody person a study that stated LH people die 1-3 years younger do to injuries and accidents because everything in the world (for the most part) is designed to be operated by right hand (doors, LHD cars, etc.)? It was an intresting read.

As a southpaw, I remember when my mother taught me at a very young age to use scissors with my right hand. While doing so, she lectured me on the fact that everything in this world is made for right-handers, and I may as well adapt.

So I did, and with few exceptions (baseball mit and golf clubs) I just learn to use tools the way a right-hander would. It has made life a lot easier. I remember when I bought my first computer with a mouse. Initially it was easier to use my left hand, but I decided to put the mouse on the right side of the keyboard, because I knew that if I ever used anyone else's computer, that's where it would be.

And I'm no expert on vision, but I would guess that you could learn to shoot with your right eye if you practiced enough. If your vision is poor in that eye, then the solution is corrective lenses, not a left-handed camera.

I'll go back to the very firsrt post and wonder if your right thumb really needs to support your cheekbone.

I know a lot of left eye shooters and I dont know that any of them do that or have a problem using their right thumb for other things on the camera.

I think a really minor technique adjustment that would free your thumb up from support would be fairly easy to do and all your issues would be solved.

that would be 30% of those that responded - not appropos of 30% of all members.

I just yesterday set up my CF4 to where AE lock would be AF. When I tried it, didn't work. Pressing the shutter button down was still serving as AF. Anyone else had this trouble? There 3 or 4 functons, thought I tried all three. Which one do you use? Thanks for help as this would really fit my style of shooting.

It'll only work in the "Creative Zone" (letters on the mode dial), not the "Basic Zone" (pictograms/Green Box). What mode are you in?

Which is best depends on your individual shooting style. I use CF 4-0; a lot of other people prefer CF 4-1. It's like most of the other debates that come up around here - there's no single 100% correct answer, but many people think their way is the only way.

Jon, it appears to me that CF 4-0 would logically be a better choice as i see it. Correct me if i'm wrong on how it works. Let's say i'm outside on a sunnyday/blue sky. If I want to meter on the blue sky- I press and hold the * button and then recompose-focus with the shutter button on my subject and fire?
Looking in the manual on CF 4-1 it appears that this works just the opposite. Press shutter halfway to AE and then press * button to focus.

Is this a correct assumption on my part? Thanks, gerry
