For a boatload of information and debate over C.Fn. 4, here's couple days' reading material.

You're understanding how they work correctly. Some people have subjects where locking the focus is more important than locking exposure. For instance, anyone shooting a race (motor, horse, or foot) may want to pre-focus on the turn, jump, or finish line and let the exposure float so when a subject reaches there they can shoot without worrying about exposure or recomposing for correct focus.

Jon, it appears to me that CF 4-0 would logically be a better choice as i see it. Correct me if i'm wrong on how it works. Let's say i'm outside on a sunnyday/blue sky. If I want to meter on the blue sky- I press and hold the * button and then recompose-focus with the shutter button on my subject and fire?
Looking in the manual on CF 4-1 it appears that this works just the opposite. Press shutter halfway to AE and then press * button to focus.

Is this a correct assumption on my part? Thanks, gerry

Many here believe CF 4-1 is the better choice. I now have control over focusing separate from my shutter release. Try it, I did for a week and have not gone back since.

Hey Jon, at the time I was in program mode which I don't normally shoot in. Normally TV or AV. Shouldn't it have worked in P mode.

Program P or Program Green Box? CFs should work in "P" mode, not in green box.

i'm left everything...don't think i'll ever get used to using my non master eye on the viewfinder. Stoopid right handed world vmad

*shake left fist*

Actually, from what I've read about left-handed baseball players, the right eye is the dominant one for lefties; at least as it relates to batting.

That's actually pretty strange, left arm/right eye and vice versa. The lefties I have met were more of the left/left varieties. Doesn't right-brain dominance influence consistent left-ness for everything?

And I'm still trying to make the AF * approach work for me...
