I want to get a new video camera, I decided on getting a hard drive camera.

Whats does the Grosss pixels of the CCD mean? I know that the CCD is the sensor.

http://www.bhphotovideo.com …EG&addedTroughType=search (external link)
The Sony DCR-SR40 has a 30gb HD and 680k gross pixels. The Sensor is 1/6"
and the aperture is f/1.8-3.1
Its $480 at BH ($500+ at store)

http://www.bhphotovideo.com …EG&addedTroughType=search (external link)
This is the Sony DCR-SR80, it has a 60gb hd, 1070k Gross pixels, sensor is 1/5.5"
The aperture is f/1.8-2.5, also has ports for accesorys and memory stick i believe

Its normally $650-$800 but on sale for $550 for black Friday

Would you say the 60GB DCR-SR80 is the better deal here? Ive been needing a new one for video editing... Just hard since im going to be buying a video camera, 70-200 F/4 and ANOTHER Trans Am tomorrow and im 16 and dont have a ton of money to blow

That does look sweet. My mind inquires a lot about videography, how they get bokeh and stuff, if you ever watch a show you'll see how they'll start out of focus on the persons face and then go in focus. It seems like video cameras have a lot in common with photographic cameras. I'd get into it, but I don't know what I'de take videos of, and I don't have the patience to go editing a bunch of video.

they are more like moving pictures PS style, until you get into the prosumer models and interchangeable lenses.

Funnily enough I think you've got to be pretty gifted to be good at both still and video, it must be a different mindset or something. I bought a half way decent video camera for my daughters wedding a few years back, used it for that and then sold it straight after... I just couldn't get into it and I was pretty useless! Of course it has been said that I'm useless at stills as well

However from a gadget point of view I think they're brilliant!

cheers
Bill

I think it's a whole different creative area. With a photo I feel it is more abstract, you take a photo and are telling a story perhaps by that photo, it could be a story where you have to make observations and guesses on what you can see. In a video on the other hand, a story could be like reading a book, where it is very simple and laid out.

The only thing I don't like about those cameras is that when the drive is full, you have to offload your video to record some more, and you never have an online hard copy.
Everything you archive will be compressed at least 2 times (once in the camera as it records to the drive, and once when you put it on a DVD as an Mpeg2 file).

another thing that bothers me is when you have a hard drive crash in the camera, camera is now useless till it's fixed and you lose the video that was on there.

I'd like to have a camera that has removable hard drives and is affordable. they have braodcast cameras with this feature but they are too pricey for me.

Let us know how the camera works out for you.
Also, are you getting another 2nd gen T/A?

Yes, went and looked at an 80 today, drove nice and was a solid car, needs a lot of little work though, trying to get the guy down in price. But we stumbled upon an 81 Turbo Formula WS6 with 67k miles thats been sitting since 89. This car is as solid as can be! except for one fender... heres the thread

I'll stick to video tapes any time. Not only do they give you unlimited capacity (as long as you can bring along enough tapes with you) but they inherently provide archival files for you if you don't reuse the tapes. :)
