Hi guys

Just wanted people's opinions.

I have decided to buy a DSLR and i have found these are my choices.

1 - Nikon D40 with 18 - 55 mm lens $999

2 - Pentax K100 with 18 - 50 mm $899 (or with 18 - 125 mm aswell, $1075)

3 - (Second Hand) Canon EOS 300D + 18 - 55 mm + 55 - 200 mm $799 (both Canon lenses)

What does everyone think?

By the way, the prices are all in Australian $'s

Thanks

Matt

Probably none of the above. It would probably be better to save your money for an XT and a decent lens. You can get a used 350D pretty cheap. Just watch the Classifieds here and the Buy and Sell forum on www.fredmiranda.com (external link). I'm sure you'll find one for the same price that they're asking for the 300D you listed above.

You could get an XT with a Tamron 28-75 or a Sigma 17-70 for under $1k. That'd be your best bet.

If I only had the choice of the three cameras in the poll, and if I were satisfied with their lens system, I'd go with the Pentax. Fortunately there are a lot of other cameras out there to choose from. :)

the 20D's are coming down in price now because of the new 30D so you could hang around for one of those that would be better again

Second hand... but you can find stuff real cheaper than your prices! Poke around here at the Marketplace or FM's buy&sell. You can get a nice 10D or 300D for as low as 300$! Then get a nifty fifty and some nice glass and you'll be set.

Please note, all - those prices are in Australian dollars' Straight US conversions are $774, $697 and $619. That's strictly applying the current rate of exchange; as those Down Under are fond (not really) of noting, US prices tend to be less than "at home" prices.

Well, the D40 hasn't come out yet, IIRC - it's supposed to come out in another month, and then you'll need to see if there are any "teething pains". The Pentax will have a full warranty, and it's been around for a bit, so should be debugged by now, but take a gander at available lenses (not saying this will be a problem; I just don't know) to see how much growth potential you'll have there. If you don't mind buying used (no warranty), you migth want to consider a 350D or 10D and foregoing the 55-200. The 10D won't take EF-S lenses, but shouldn't be markedly more expensive than a 300D, and has a slightly better feature set. There may be some 350Ds going (even new) for reduced prices since the 400D has been released; that's also worth looking for.

I'm not sure what the difference in Australian dollars are, is it similiar to Canadian?

Since this is your first dslr I would probably recomend either the nikon or canon because they make far more lenses than the pentax does. If you can aford it I would recomend either the canon xti or nikon d80 My cousin has the nikon D70 and loves it. I have the canon 300D and 30D. They are both fantastic cameras the differnce is speed and build the 30d responds much faster and is heavier than the 300 but they are both geat cameras.

I would recomend that you check out http://dpreview.com/reviews/ (external link) since they are pretty non bias in my opinion . Whatever you decide good luck and let us know

As many of the posts above indicate, your poll is rather limited, and it seems there are a few options you have not considered.

The Nikon D40 is a retrograde step, lord knows why they brought this out - in the UK it costs only a little bit less then the 400D, FFS!

A Canon 300d is old - so I would prefer something newer - everything is upgraded on the newer models, and if you can find one of these used, why can't you find a 350D?

The Pentax is the only camera you list that I would seriously consider - then I'd just carry on saving and get the Pentax K10D if i wanted a Pentax, or a 400D.

Don't settle, get something that will stretch you and last a while.
