Purchased a 30D from Dell last week, and got an email that it was delivered to my home yesterday! Unfortunately, I'm on the road for several more days . . . pictures of ducks in the not-too-distant future.

The only reason, IMHO, to consider an upgrade to the 400D is for the improved focussing with fast lenses (same as the 30D). All the other changes are trivial. If you have f/2.8 or faster lenses, and often use them at maximum aperture, the 400D is an improvement.

Whether the 30D is worth while instead is a personal thing. For me the size/weight are a major negative, but I suspect I'm in the minority :)

BTW folks - the 400D inherited the 30D's AF engine. So they are at least on par in this department.

The 30D has a slightly bigger viewfinder. The quick control dial is awesome :D :D (5D here.. dial included, of course). And having the top deck LCD can be useful in its own right.

I enjoy the light weight of the 350D too, even though I have to put up with some of the compromises it makes. As a second body it is nice, because it's light. I use it to complement my 5D - but you can easily tell which is my main camera. The 30D is very much more like the 5D than the 350D/400D.

It's all down to the money...
We all know what we would buy if money were no object...
Get yourself a second-hand 20D - with the advent of the 30D they are freely available from many very reputable dealers and come with guarantees.
Bought mine on Ebay without any problem but thats another story!
Good luck

Hello,

I'm in a similar situation as JF1980...but was looking at the 5D instead of 30D, figure make the jump while I have the money (no kids, no wife, blah blah blah)

I agree. In our case, we're upgrading our backup camera body from a Rebel/300D, so I looked at the 30D and 5D. Both are a great deal with Canon's current rebates (in the US anyway), but $600 of of the 5D was just too good to pass up. The 5D is almost 1.5 years old, but is still a lot of camera for $2.2k.

Hi all, I know there will be a lot of differing opinions but I would like to see what the general consensus is.

With the 400D being released (and at a pretty reasonable price) I have questioned whether or not I should upgrade my 350D.

nah!

wait for the 40D;)

You cant tell someone to wait for a camera with no release date. After all this IS just a rumor, no one knows for sure what Canon is going to do. Are you saying you have some "inside information?

I agree.
buy now a good enough camera and enjoy, don't wait what is the next models, who knows, maybe not that much features so wasting time to wait.
I recommend to get 30D if you can, if not then 400D is good camera, or if you can find used 20D it is still great previous camera.

yes! inside my head;)

10D, 20D, 30D .......what's the betting there'll be a 40D???

What's the betting sales of the 30D have nosedived since the introduction of the 400D?, (8MP V 10 for half the cost?)

can Canon wait a whole year with no 40D? - what's the betting the FEBRUARY trade show will produce the 40D?

They might call it something else but there's no doubt taht there will be a new intro level prosumer 1.6 crop 10+ MP DSLR coming out soon!!

I'd bet on it

So yes I can say that;)

I upgraded to the 30D from the XT a few months ago and have not looked back. I wanted the spot metering plus the addition of the 2nd wheel and the larger view screen. The 2nd wheel really comes in handy when shooting in manual. I will admit there also was some degree of wanting a new toy.

I must admit I like the small size of the 350D, but I hate not having spot metering and I think the AF system sucks (maybe I just got a bad one?!?). I'm going to try to sell my 350D and if I get what I want for it i'll go for the 30D kit. Of course there is also the element of a new toy :)
