I was in a high-drug traffic area, taking pictures of a historic building; a church that at one time was the "negro school" in the days of segregation. Since I've been in law enforcement, I've always had a firearm on me, on duty or off; and this day I had a 1911 in a shoulder holster with a coat over it. After taking a few pics, one of the neighbors comes off his porch and starts walking up to me. "Hey, nice camera, whatcha taking pictures of?" The entire time, he wasn't watching me; he was watching the camera (a Pentax K-1000; guess he didn't know how little it was worth). He got within about 10 yards when he noticed the shoulder holster under my coat. Without missing a beat he said "Hey, is that a gun?" and kept walking.

All of the hookers thought I was taking pictures as part of a sting operation and wouldn't believe me when I said otherwise. So I took their picture.

What saddens me the most about the area is that it's a typical "high drug" area- the majority of the residents are older, long-term homeowners; the criminal element is transitory and just uses the area for their sales. The older folks suffer from having the criminals there... but if the police clean them out of this area, they move to another and the cycle starts over.
