...and I find handling the XT and XTi very awkward and uncomfortable. However, I've never held one with a grip. Can those who have one with a grip AND big hands tell me how much the grip helps with the overall feel and size of the camera in their hands? Major deciding factor in whether I should buy one or not.

Thanks,

Ty

i have used (not owned though) the XT both with and without the grip. definitly a HUGE difference, a definite must for those with big hands. but overall the 20D/30D would be a better choice for handling.

I've got a grip on my 400d/xti makes a huge difference, feels much better when using big lenses alot more balanced . You have alot more battery life as you can have 2 batteries in the camera.

If you are looking for an entry level and a great feeling grip, I hate to suggest it here but you may want to look at one of the Nikon DSLR's. Nikon does a great job with hand grips, a D50 or D80 might be right up your alley.

i have huge hands too and i cannot use a 350 or 400 without a grip, it just feels too wierd,
with the grip you will be able to fit your whole hand on to grip the camera, but the 30d with grip would be a better choice as it is slightly larger

One of the biggest reasons I got the 20D over the 350 was how it fit in my hands. The 350 felt like a little p&s.

Grip makes a big difference, especially if you have a big hand.

I tried out the 350D with and without grip in a shop before buying. Adds nice weight balance (with lens on) and also give your little finger somewhere to rest. I find without the grip my little finger just sticks underneath the body and I cant grip it properly. I f I had got the 350 I would have bought the grip without a shadow of doubt.

Tried the 30D with and without grip and either way it is a dream to handle compared to the 350D.

It's still pretty small even with the grip. Still way too small for me. That, and the quick control dial on the 20D, are the reasons I sold mine. I, sir, have big hands.

Heh! That's tiny!!!

I've got large (not huge, but not exactly dainty) hands and I find the 30D + grip to be a fantastic combo with my 100-400mm.

My hands aren't that big I don't think, but I don't get picking DSLR's based on the grip. True, the XT's are small and my pinky is forced to hang off. And I have to jam my ring finger to get it on there. It can't fully support the camera. However, the same is true of my 30D, and in fact, I went to Fry's, which actually puts 5D's on the floor, and the same thing. It feels nicer, but I still can't support it with all five fingers.

I can tell the 30D from the XT more by texture and contour than size. The 5D's thickness is more noticable and the indent for the index finger is useful, but it doesn't significantly alter how I have to hold it. Or my need to use my other hand to shoot 99 percent of the time.

A grip may help, but for me, I am guessing a grip would help all about equally. At least not qualitatively differently.

I had reasons for getting the 30D and I have reasons for lusting after the 5D, for many of the same reasons most others here do. But, y'all lose me here.

Sweet new gear for a photogenic new year!
