My 2p...

I much prefer the extra dial on the 20D/30D but what really made my mind up was trying to hold a 350D with a long heavy lens (70-200 2.8IS). Gripped or ungripped it didn't really matter there just wasn't enough weight there to counter balance the lens.

...2p finished.

I have never understood the heavy lens/light camera/balance theory.

When I hold any longer lens I rest the lens on the base of my left hand so that camera and lens are balanced. The weight of the camera is not important because it is the lens I am balancing and the weight of the camera only moves the centre of balance ahead or back a few centimeters.

I have large hands and although I prefer a camera the size of my 20D or EOS 3, I have never had any trouble holding a smaller Rebel sized camera. There always seems to be room for the index finger on the shutter, the next two fingers on the front of the body and the thumb on the back. The lens/camera rests on the base of the left hand with the thumb and index finger on the zoom and/or focus ring. The upper part of the left arm rests against the chest for stability.

Can other people who have large hands please explain why this is hard to do?

My hands tend to be long and narrow rather than wide and stubby if that makes any difference.

Nobody is saying it's hard, Scott - but subjectively I for one prefer a bit of weight behind the lens when I'm shooting with say, a 400mm lens - it just feels better.

As I meant. I'm sure it is perfectly possible to balance the lens and to still get great pictures (or at least better than mine :D). I just find it easier to balance the lens and have control of the zoom/MF with my left hand if the camera is balancing the weight of the lens.

Each to their own though...

I have the 20d and I got the 5D. what a difference in holding a 400mm lens. Both Cameras are equipped with the grip, but the 5D is way bettter balanced in comparison to the 20D.
My statement is: A hevier Cam is supporting your L-Lenses way better....

Two bodies left, some "soso" lenses, and still a lot of gear.....
