I hope this is the right forum to post this question. I have just begun to do my reasearch and I thought what better place to start than P.O.T.N?

My daughter wants a camera for Christmas. She is 11 and I don't think she is ready for a DSLR. I don't know a whole lot about PS cameras so I thought I would post the question:

What would you guys reccommend for my daughter?

Thanks
Jamie

Do you want something she can grow with or just a basic dummy mode camera? A530 has all the dummy modes plus full manual, the next step up is A540 that includes AV/TV, a larget screen and is compatable with a lens adapter so she could later take advantage of different filters and lens converters.

60D, Canon 18-135 IS, Sigma 10-20 hsm, 24-70 2.8 hsm, 70-200 2.8 hsm, 430EX II, and all the other stuff that goes along with it.

I would like a little growth to it. Something that has good IQ that will not be disappointing to her. Her Grandmother (my Mom) has a camera in her hand all the time as do I. So this is a hobbie I hope she picks up and maybe makes more of one day. If it is something that she likes and grows with then when I upgrade my body I will hand her my XT to grow with a little further. Where she can save some allowance and buy some glass of her own. At least that is what I am hoping for. I am about putting forth the carrots and adding fertilizer but not pushing hard.

I'll look at the A540.

Any other suggestions?

Fuji s7000 has great optics, long battery life(4-AA), and in addition to auto it does have manual controls as well as macro. I used one for a couple of years and it's a great little camera. Oh it also used sd and cf memory

Just another shutterbug.

Jamie, here's a good place to look at the P/S options... I think so long as you stick with one that gives her "manual" as an option, she'll have plenty of room to grow out of auto mode and let her experiment with what she can do with more choices. http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Canon/ (external link)

For the price, the A6XX series are realy great, tons of settings to play with and the LCD swivel etc. If size isn't important, the S3 IS is probably a great step up.

I have the A520 and find it terribly slow compared to my S2. I used to have the A610 and just loved it but sold it for the 12X zoom of the S2.

Canon Rebel xt with kit len, Sigma 55-200mm F4-5.6 DC, Canon S2IS, & not enough time to use them all.
