Hi guys,
This should really be a no brainer but...I've got the chance of a 5d and 24-105 f4L at a ridiculous price, so, do I go full frame from my 400d and accept the need to buy longer lenses? Or, spend the cash on a stabilised/faster telephoto? I mainly do rugby and motorsport.

The 5D is probably not the best choice for action like Rugby/ Motorsport. I would get the faster tele.

i would go with the option of gettin more glass.

you can always go full frame later.

Thanks. I guess thats a 70-200 f2.8 IS then, to replace my f4. Unless I go the second 400d with 300 f4 route. Any suggestions?

I really like my 70-200 f/2.8 for many purposes. If you need a300 mm f/4 you can add a 1.4x teleconverter and get pretty close. For sports I prefer to use a zoom lens because you can follow the action and frame the shot using the zoom.

A 300 mm lens is more specialized, and if you need it is great, but it is not a adaptable to other situations.

Good choice on keeping the 400D instead of splurging on the 5D. I doubt that I will ever find a real reason to go full frame again, even though that was all I used for about 25 years.

thanks for the input scott. i've never been a big fan of converters, or even changing lenses in the middle of a match, so the 300 f4 on another 400d body would give me the extra reach i'm usually looking for. i'm used to juggling a couple of cameras on the touchline. i guess i'm just pixel chasing given my propensity for close cropping

5D and 24-105 is the best camera/lens I have encountered in 40 years. 300/4 L IS images are simply superb. Go figure. No crop factor camera can compare.

They are both 3 FPS. So you get no increase in speed and you'll need longer lenses. Yes it's a great camera but you should probably look for a 20 or 30D with 5 FPS.

I've had the 20D since Christmas last year and just got the 5D. There is a big difference in fps. If you are set to shoot continuous for fast moving sports, get the 30D and the 70-200 IS. That combination will sing for you.

Simply.... the 5D and 24-105 is the best camera/lens combo i have encountered in 28 years. It should be fine for rugby....motorsports, maybe...... have fun- you will when you see the files.

1.6 crop helps for sport unless you can afford longer lenses for the 5D. I'd go for a 30D.

Hi, thanks to everyone for your input! As I said, the 5d+lens was just a bargaihn price (£900!) but not necessarily suited to what I shoot most. Maybe I need to get out more. I've nevr even considered the 20d/30d 5fps bodies as I'm not much of a sprayer, but I'll take it on board. Again, thanks for your input, it looks like the new 70-200 f2.8 and 300 f4 option with maybe a 20d next year. Oh, I posted in c+c last night, can someone take a look please? It's under "sportrait".

You'd best be absolutely sure about the credibility of your source for the "bargain price". MANY folks have been taken in by scams when using the Internet to buy things.

Fortunately, some people have posted here prior to making their "fantastic" purchase and have been suitably warned before throwing their money down some black hole.

Thanks Skiop. My mom always said, if it's too good to be true, then it isn't. In this instance , it's pukka. But I'm still going the glass/20d route. Thanks to everyone for taking the time...
