Looking for some gallery software...

I'm looking for a temporary solution, so something free would be preferable!

Basically, I shoot a lot of images for press use, and then end up emailing a load of pictures, usually just for one or two to be used. Other times I'll zip up the files and upload them, but then whatever publication it is has to download a 20mb+ zip file, open it up and look through the contents.

So I thought, to make things easier, have a load of thumbnails that they can browse, and then clicking takes them to the full size image (often large resolutions/file sizes). That way they can just select the photos they want, without downloading every hi-res shot from the session.

Any advice as to what the best piece of software for this could be? It doesn't have to be flashy, maybe just a short caption etc., but as long as it has reasonably good thumbnails, and the ability to save the hi-res shots, that's all I really need.

As I say it's just for a couple of months, I'll be re-designing my site over the winter most probably, but I have a few more events to do before then.

jalbum for sure. Just put up thumbnails, let them select, then email the pics in, otherwise ftp upload speeds will take about the same time as email. Incidentally using filezilla (google it, free) it can upload more than one file at a time, which can make uploads a LOT faster if you have a lot of small files to upload, as it effectively cuts out connection latency.

Thanks for suggesting JAlbum. I posted in general chat about something like this and this is absolutely what I was looking for! Fantastic stuff for the price :)

SimpleViewer uses flash, i've had customers complain that flash gets blocked at their workplace, so now everything I do is pure html. No point losing customers before they even see your website.

Have a look at Coppermine. I use it for my web gallery. Very easy to setup and maintain. Check my sig for my gallery.

I wanted something dynamic and simple, so I wrote my own (using php). All it does is display the contents of the directory; so if I want to add new images all I have to do is ftp the image and a thumbnail to whatever folder I want the image to be in.

I use this as well, one of the things i like about it most is you can upload directly from xp "publish this file to the web" and it handles the resizing etc

Agreed!

Bonus: Gallery is completely open source and has quite a collection of developers (for tools, add-ons, etc..) working on it. Which is great because that means people are still interested and making new stuff
