I have noticed that images I post to the web, lack the warmth & contrast of the original in photoshop

I currently use ProPhotoRGB 16bit. Would I be better placed using something else.

I mainly display my images on the web saving as JPEG but also do some printing of those photos people want, from the original photoshop file

Any advice appreciated

Regards

Mark

Images for web display must be in sRGB because most web browsers lack color management capability (the ability to read an embedded profile and adjust the display accordingly) and therefore assume that everything is sRGB. Make a copy of the file for uploading and convert its space. Afterwards you can delete it.

If you use the 'save for web' option It should automatically change it and it will save a copy, leaving the original untouched.

No, it won't. You have to covert the color space yourself first before doing the save for web.

Save for web definitely doesn't convert to sRgb, try it with an Adobe RGB image and see.

It depends on what you mean by "harming the image". Going from a wide space to a narrower one will cause loss of data if the original contains colors outside the gamut of the narrow space. Depending on the rendering intent, colors will be compressed to make room for the remapped out of gamut colors or the OOG colors will all be remapped to the nearest available color. Once this is done you cannot regain the data. However, the loss may not be visible if the OOG colors are not important elements of the image.

For the most part, yes. My workflow goes something like this:
1. Raw to 16 bit .psd/.tif conversion (AdobeRGB colorspace)
2. Edit 16 bit image to my liking
3. Save 16 bit image
If I'm putting the image on the web
4. Resize image for web
5. Convert image to sRGB colorspace (Edit->Convert Colorspace)
6. Change image to 8bit
7. Save as jpg (File->Save As if I want exif intact, File->Save for Web if I don't want the exif)

I typically do steps 1-3 to all the images I want to keep, then use an action and batch steps 4-7. I'm not sure if there's a better way to go about it , but it works for me.

Result is I have a 16 bit image in a colorspace better suited for editing, and I have an 8 bit image in sRGB for viewing on web... both with matching colors/tones.
