Hi,

I have narrowed my search down for digital cameras to the Canon G5 and the Nikon Coolpix 5700. I know this is a Canon bias forum but I have not found a Nikon forum to ask the same. Can you help me make my decision? Thanks.

You can either:

1. Buy both at a vendor that has no restocking fee on returns, try them both out for a week, then return the one you like the least.

2. Buy one at a vendor that has no restocking fee on returns, try it out for a week, and return it. Buy the other one, and try it out for a week; if you like it best, keep it, if not, return it and get the other one.

The first option will be simpler, and you have your second choice returned before the grace period on your credit card expired.

Thats a good idea but I don't have that much money floating around in my bank account to do this. Heck, I don't even have enough to buy a G5 or 5700 from any of our local venders, I am buying online at a much cheaper price.

They are quite different cameras, the Canon is smaller and easier to handle, the Nikon has a much larger optical zoom range.

The main drawback on the increase of optical zoom is extremely slow shutter response on the Nikon.

Canon lenses are slightly better, giving you slightly better colour matching and very slightly more clarity if you enlarge your image.

Really it all comes down to the zoom whether you need it or not???

If cash is tight, wait a month or two, because after the PMA show, most current cameras will drop in price due to new model releases (unless you need a camera right now, that is).

Yo,
Though I am an extremely happy G5 owner, I wanted to buy the Nikon 5400 initially (the 5700 was way to pricey for me).
But go for the G5, especially since it has drastically dropped in price and as civis stated, it will only continue to do so.

I need to have a camera by the 1st of April. Do you think the prices will drop by then?

Also, do you think this is a good deal? http://cgi.ebay.com …me=STRK%3AMEBWA%3AIT&rd=1 (external link)

The budget will alow a 512 compact flash card and possibly an extra battery & external charger.

Nikon 5700 seem to be near to Minolta DiMAGE 7i (7x zoom) that is a bit big for me, but has manual Zoom and 28 WA, AA batteries.
Canon G5 is onother machine: freindly, you can carry it in your pocket, but 4x zoom 35-105.

Ciao

You are right, this is a Canon biased site. I mean, I'll be honest, I just think Canon are the forerunners in digital technology. I really don't think you'd be disappointed with a Canon.

If you want an unbiased opinion, check out dpreview. They do tests and reviews of all the major models, from an objective point of view. They go really in depth, and even provide sample images. That site is what prompted me to get my G2. Check out pcphotoreview also. It's got reviews written by actual consumers who own the camera they are writing about... just beware, some of them don't know what they are talking about ;)

Here are a few direct links reviewing the cameras you mention:
Canon G5 @ dpreview (external link)
Canon G5 @ pcphotoreview (external link)
Nikon Coolpix 5700 @ dpreview (external link)
Nikon Coolpix 5700 @ pcphotoreview (external link)

Hope you find what you're looking for, and happy shooting!

blah something clever blah blahdie blah.....
