I have uploaded a tutorial for creating HDR images using layers and layer masks. So I thought it might be interresting for those who doesn't have photoshop CS2 or simply, like me, prefer to do things the hard way

Nice one. I have PS5 and been doing it this way for some time. I've tried other ways and the gradient tool seems to work the best.

Very nicely explained in simple terms. Having PS7 I've been interested in all the HDR talk and look forward to trying this technique.

Thanks for the post.

Thanks for the tutorial. I'm not quite sure what you mean by the following step. /Dan

4. Create a digital Neutral Density filter: To make things go faster, use a gradient from the black and white to quickly set the transparency, this is exactly the effect a Neutral Density filter would have done for you.
For most pictures the digital ND filter should be refined with the brush tool later.
That way you have a fast quick setup. As you can see on the layer mask now, the top of the mask is now white and the bottom black. That means that the bottom is now transparent, revealing the image on the bottom layer.

I'm happy you found it helpful
CannedHeat:
It simply means that to get started just select the gradient tool (make sure that Gradient is selected and not fill) and select your mask.
Get the default foreground/background layers by clicking D on your keyboard
then drag the mouse on your picture from top to bottom.

Hardman if you like the gradient tool you will like this even better.

I will be posting yet another way to create the mask today and, IMHO, I think it is one of the best. will keep you posted

To make your life even easier:
Take a look at this Quicktime movie (external link).

Loads the Composite as a selection. You make a layer mask out of that.
About the same as you do using threshold, but faster & easier.
You can alter the mask using a black or white brush, but you can also use levels on (a part of) it...
