Hi, I own a Canon D60 and I want to upgrade, what should be the best choice to go, I have about $1500.00us, does it really worth it? Or should I buy a better lens, My favorites subject are birds.

Thank you for all your suggestions

Daniel

I went from the D60 to the 20D. What are the areas you find the D60 leaves you wanting more in? If you can peg those, it'll be much easier to figure on the best approach. My reasons were faster startup, higher fps, bigger buffer, and more AF points. The extra 2 MP wasn't a big seller. From your budget, the 30D would be about the only reasonable choice for a new body. Depending on what lenses you have though, and what issues you identify, a longer/faster lens might be a better option.

the megapixel shouldnt be a reason to upgrade like jon said, but there are huge differences in cameras. the technologies have greatly improved. image quality, build, noise, features, everything. so yes take your 1500 and upgrade. but i would wait until january or febuary (forgot which month) since thats when canon will be offering new camera(s) e.i. 40D.

I also went from the D60 to 20D, but now that it is out I would go to the 30D.

There are several improvement I find are very important.

The start up time, either from off or sleep mode is almost instantaneous on the 20D. I missed some good wildlife pictures with the D60 while I was waiting for it to get ready to shoot.

If you shoot sports, the increased buffer size allows a lot of JPEG shots before it is loaded and even RAW is feasible with 6 shots on the 20D or 11 on the 30D before buffer overload occurs.

Autofocus is improved, although I still mainly use just the centre AF point and the improvement is not as noticeable as when all points are used in both cameras.

High ISO noise is improved so that ISO 800 on the 20D is comparable to ISO 400 on the D60, which is useful for those early morning and late evening wildlife shots.

The D60 can not use EF-S lenses, which means that you cannot use some excellent new lenses like the 10-22, 17-55 f/2.8 IS, 17-85 IS and 65 mm macro. The 17-55 and 10-22 are my two most used lenses for general and landscape photography.

Battery life seems to be improved. Although the 20D uses the same battery as the D60 and has larger files, it seems to get many more pictures per charge than the D60.

There are other improvements, but these are the ones I find most important for my style of photography.

The only thing that I find not quite as good on the 20D is that the shutter noise seems to be louder, but apparently it is supposed to have a longer service life.

There won't be a replacement for the 30D until the fall of 2007. It is 18 months, not 12 months, between replacements.

I went from the D60 to the 30D and the biggest difference is the faster AF, A lot faster:-), other than that the D60 is a great camera. I wasn't interested in the more megapixels or the larger lcd but the faster AF was important. Oh yeah and the start up or wake up time on the 30D is unbelieveably fast, which was a bonus I wasn't even aware of.

Canon will not wait 18 months if they find that the 30D is losing too much market share to the 10 MP offerings from all their competitors. It is marketing and technology that determine new product dates, not the calendar.

There were 18 months between 10D and 20D, and between 20D and 30D.

There were 12 months between D60 and 10D.

There were 21 months between D30 and D60.

Canon knows when they'd like to release the successor to the 30D. But they aren't talking. As yet there aren't any credible rumours about when, or what features, a successor model will have. As OP's using a D60, should the D60's shortcomings relative to the 30D be areas of concern to him, there's no reason to wait for a new camera coming "maƱana" when there's an answer here today. And if the issues he has aren't addressed by the 30D, who's to say a 40D will be the solution?
