There is NO photograph worth $30 in a 4x6 print. No way. I'm sorry but I don't care how much you spew the "sell it and it'll sell" schpiel. It's still an overpriced 4x6...especially in the context that it's a local portrait photographer. We're not talking Ansel Adams or Annie Liebowitz here. Even they aren't worth $30 for a 4x6 as far as I'm concerned. Will some pay it? Sure. But unless you're in a very very affluent area then you'll alienate customers quick.
If you don't really want to sell 4x6s, don't offer them. That's certainly better than selling a 4x6 for 30 bucks and an 8x10 for 100.
The cost of doing business varies from locale to locale. Apart from the actual monetary value we're talking here, you did get the idea I was trying to impart on the OP that if he wants to sell a photograph for XX it must be WORTH XX to said customer correct?
He can sell his shots for $1000, I don't care.... but the person buying the picture must be happy with the price, regardless of what the dollar amount is.
Now if he goes undercutting ME in my town and sells his 4x6 prints for $1 I'm going to be pissed. There has to be a local balance of supply and demand. If everyone is his town charges $XX for a print, he is well within his right to ask at, near or above $XX for his work if he can justify its value against the other photographer's work.
That being said, in my town (country?) 18 5x7 prints from a wedding costs $600. That's just over $33 bub and the guy is only there for ONE HOUR. No CD, no PP just 18 jpgs right to a dye-sub. And that is refletive of the cost of doing business here. Plus this outfit has the LOCK on large local weddings. I'm currently working on dethroning them to say the least.

It's not a sell schpiel, it's what some people charge is reflective of their location, work, local laws/regs and supply/demand.
In the OP's case, I doubt there is much demand for $30 4x6 prints, but he needs to sell top notch work to command the local rates it appears.
