I am starting to do chid and family portraits locally.
The only competitors are charging $30 for one 4X6. and $500-700 for a CD. This is after the sit fee!!! Is this normal????

I am having trouble trying to set my prices. I would love to charge this much but I just don't have the experience and would not feel right.

good questions, I know locally they have flat sitting fees of $250 for a set amount of time and that comes with some prints, like 20 4x6's and perhaps a cd (vut not print quality). I am not really sure ofthe exact numbers tho. They also offer photo 'packages' on top of that.

depends on the customer, depends on your skill level...

Ive seen $20-30 for an 8x10 is kinda average for a budget thing.

$500-700 for a CD seems like a lot unless its for something like a wedding.

a single 4x6 priced at $30 is absurd no matter who or where you are.

One of the local photographers here charges $75 in studio sitting fee, and $125 on location.

Thats just to show up, I dont know what she charges on hour on top of that, and for prints.

Eh, that's $AU40 or so for a 4x6.. that's very, very expensive at least from what I've seen. But hey, if they sell their prints at that price more power to them! Must be good or their customers must be loaded :p

How much are they charging for 8x10? Some photographers charge a lot for 4x6 because they really don't want to sell them because they believe the photos look much better printed larger. I've also read that some photographers price the 4x6 print so high because some people will just by your smallest print size and then scan them.

I charge 10 USd for one of my unprocessed jpg 4x6s. If it comes from RAW/photoshoot I package it as such:

6 5x7s = $82
8 5x7s = $116

No one ever takes these packages. They usually take allimages on a CD. I charge teh same price per image whether it's print or CD.

I'm in a unique situation where I will almost never see my client again. It's a quick sales process and shoot 'em, sell 'em and wave goodbye as they get on the plane.

$30 for a 4x6 is not absurd. Make sure it's WORTH $30 to the customer and they'll buy it. Is it a $30 value? I'd let Annie Liebowitz shoot me for $30. Would it be worth $30? Probabyl not as I don't like her photographs....but I would be buying this sentence "Annie shot me".

Sell yourself, sell your craft and people will pay anything to have what you've created. Sell them a $30 photograph. Don't sell them a $10 shot for $30.

There is NO photograph worth $30 in a 4x6 print. No way. I'm sorry but I don't care how much you spew the "sell it and it'll sell" schpiel. It's still an overpriced 4x6...especially in the context that it's a local portrait photographer. We're not talking Ansel Adams or Annie Liebowitz here. Even they aren't worth $30 for a 4x6 as far as I'm concerned. Will some pay it? Sure. But unless you're in a very very affluent area then you'll alienate customers quick.

If you don't really want to sell 4x6s, don't offer them. That's certainly better than selling a 4x6 for 30 bucks and an 8x10 for 100.

I think you are wrong. There are some people in my area that charge $4500 for a sit fee. You don't want to know what they charge for a 4X6.

The cost of doing business varies from locale to locale. Apart from the actual monetary value we're talking here, you did get the idea I was trying to impart on the OP that if he wants to sell a photograph for XX it must be WORTH XX to said customer correct?

He can sell his shots for $1000, I don't care.... but the person buying the picture must be happy with the price, regardless of what the dollar amount is.

Now if he goes undercutting ME in my town and sells his 4x6 prints for $1 I'm going to be pissed. There has to be a local balance of supply and demand. If everyone is his town charges $XX for a print, he is well within his right to ask at, near or above $XX for his work if he can justify its value against the other photographer's work.

That being said, in my town (country?) 18 5x7 prints from a wedding costs $600. That's just over $33 bub and the guy is only there for ONE HOUR. No CD, no PP just 18 jpgs right to a dye-sub. And that is refletive of the cost of doing business here. Plus this outfit has the LOCK on large local weddings. I'm currently working on dethroning them to say the least.

It's not a sell schpiel, it's what some people charge is reflective of their location, work, local laws/regs and supply/demand.

In the OP's case, I doubt there is much demand for $30 4x6 prints, but he needs to sell top notch work to command the local rates it appears.
