Finally!

I have been, for some reason, stuck in the P&S world for a long time. I used to have the old 35mm rebel but never took it out of auto mode so that doesn't really count.

Found myself wanting more even after purchasing the latest S3....

So I gathered up come courage and purchased a used 300D with grip, got a 2gb card and also bought a used 50mm1.8 to go with the new SLR.

I have been waiting and waiting and then had to wait some more as shipping time to Germany (military) ain't the quickest.

But today it all showed up at once....and it's all in immaculate condition :D

I can't wait to get out there the day after tomorrow (first day off from work) and go on my first SLR shoot :D I am, of course, headed to an area nearby with lots of great photo opps....which has a lake to boot...hopefully ducks :)

I hated the way the S3 felt in my hand...way too small....this rebel is PERFECT...nice and ..........chunky is the only way to describe it lol :)

Weird to have the 50mm on and not be able to zoom haha....definitely not used to that.

Anyway, shots from my first session promised...couple of days away :)

Congrats on the SLR you wanted. Have fun taking you shots with it. I will be looking to see your duck shot with it.

Yup - now you can start playing with the big kids !

That 300D is a VERY nice camera. It made me enough money to buy a couple 20D's in about 5 months.

A 40D, a 30D, some nice glass and a great Shooting Partner.

Where are you in Germany? (If you are permitted to say). I was stationed in Kitzingen up by Würzburg many, many, many years ago. In my sig you'll see a Leica M-4. The first thing I did when I arrived at Rhein-Main was to go to the Frankfurt PX and order it. Still have it, obviously.

Film: Leica M-4, Elan 7E, Rolleiflex 2.8f, Pentax 645 -- Digital: Canon Pro-1, EOS 5D Mk III
EOS Lenses: Sigma 24-70 f2.8 EX - Canon EF 17-40 f4.0L - Canon EF 24-105 f4.0L - Canon EF 35 f1.4L USM - Canon EF100-400 f4.5-5.6L IS USM - Canon EF100 f2.8 Macro - Other stuff: MR 14EX - 430EX - 580EXII - ST-E2 - TC1.4x - TC-80N3

I'm at Ramstein AB...for my second tour. first tour was '99-'01. Didn't really travel around or see anything the first time...as I was still a kid and didn't want to venture out and see anything. I've been kicking myself ever since, so now I'm making it a point to see as much of europe as I can with my wife while I'm over here this time :)

Congrats Andrew - I think that the 300D was one of the most significant cameras ever made simply based on the influence that it had on the market and what is spawned. It also takes wonferful photos and with the enhanced firmware - has a good feature set. Enjoy.

On a side note - what is the dRebel Alliance mentioned in your signature? Curious.

Congratulations on your DSLR! you are going to have so much fun. Only thing is, you might find that 50mm prime length a bit too long, IMO. I'd suggest looking for a kit lens - deluded people are always selling them off for small change, and it will add a serious amount of versatility to your camera. the kit lens is perfectly adequate stopped down to f/8

Canon 6D
Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 , Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 macro
CanonEF 17-40 f/4 L Canon EF 24-70 f/4 IS L and 70-200 f/4 L :D
Speedlite 580EX and some bags'n pods'n stuff

lol, yes I noticed that when I first started messing with it...first thing I did was put this 50mm lens on it that I hear so much about and realized a) this is closer to my subjects than I thought it would be! (I was in my small living room) and b) man this is weird not being able to zoom in/out lol

luckily I also got a used kit lens in great condition. :)

I'm headed out today on my first SLR shoot, wish me luck....be back in a few hours to post some results :D

Congrats on the camera. Now get out there and take pictures. Put it on M and start learning. If you are taking important pictures revert to P mode. You will learn the most in M mode.

Have fun
