Nice, but I still consider that it is very expensive... I will make a DIY one when I have my 70-200 f/4L and I am sure I will not spend more that 15 americans and the look will be at least 75% accurate to the Canon one...

That would be one hell of a sales idea if you can make a good, solid tripod ring for that much.

Does it match up with the foot pattern on the canon one? I mean, will RRS or Wimberly plates fit it?

J

It's identical to the Canon, but if it fits the RRS/Wimb, I can't confirm that. Maybe someone else can chime in.

Not that hard. The Chinese already do it....their secret is in the quantity ;)

Their machining and production techniques for metal and plastics are pretty impressive actually. They can churn out lots of very decent stuff if you give them the right incentive. I never imagined I would have a Chinese tripod but it is surprisingly good.. and surprisingly cheap! (although some have remarked that they have been, uhh, 'inspired' by other big name tripod manufacturers). Weighs 1.5kg, holds 4.5.

I'm sure the seller is making quite a decent margin.. but such is the way of the world...

well, these are knock-offs being sold just like the aftermarket hoods on ebay. the entrepreneurial spirit is strong in china and these guys will knock-off anything from gucci hand bags to rolex watches.

as a consumer you gotta love that.

i'd buy one if i wanted a tripod collar...in fact i may get one anyway :D .

The aftermarket hoods are a little tight though, at least the EW-83E equivalent I bought was. Sometimes they cut things a little too close, glad to see this is not the case in the new tripod collar.

The other thing I draw the line with them on is selling a knockoff as the real thing. I am quite OK if they sell it to me as an "equivalent" or under their own brand name so I know what I am buying into. So far, so good :)

you got to be careful with many of these dealers because they don't always tell you the item is a fake or knock-off.

usually price and country of origin are the best clues.

This ring also fits the 300/4 (non-IS only, because the IS has a fatter diameter)

It fits 4 lenses (that I'm aware of):

7-2L f4 non IS
7-2L f4 IS
300L f4 non-IS
400L f5.6
