The photographer is the person who see's the picture, not the camera or lens ;)

I agree, but I've also seen a lot of crappy, noisy and overall bad pictures taken by so-called artists which could have been way better if proper equipment would have been used, I also agree that pure art has nothing to do with expensive gear but then again, why are we using expensive cameras and lenses instead of ****ty disposables? It is art, which matters, doesn't it?

I want to quote everybody!!.. ohh! i'm excited another Rockwell bashing thread.. it's been awhile..  .. I do believe that we've all learned over and over again not to pay attention to Rockwell... at best he's a saturized photoshopper nightmare.. at worst he's..... nope. can't say it. I'd get in trouble... ..

sari

At best...good ole Ken is a babbling idiot, but you already know that...too bad not everyone has caught on yet! The good news is....here is another chance to say what we all really think about Ken.

I won't give Rockwell the pleasure of my clicking on his site.
I answered "NO". If Rockwell said it, it's most likely to be wrong.

If that isn't the understatement of the century, I don't know what is. I often suspect Ken needs prompting to recall his own name.

Well he has got a point, give a disposable camera to a 3 year old girl and then give her the 1ds mkII. The dispoable camera will yield better results because she won't even know how to turn the 1ds mkII on. The same with Ken.

Also, what was he on about when he said 35mm was the sharpest setting for the 16-35? Since when has the long end of a wide angle zoom been the sharpest...

To get better results from the DSLR he has to be experienced in it, and compare; bokeh, flare, distortion, AF speed, etc...

Too bad someone figured out how to turn Ken on....sure would be great to find his off switch. I suspect the inhabitants of the monkey cage at the Bronx Zoo could write a more informed and objective opinion than Ken.

And on the subject of sharp...it is readily apparent that Ken is far from being the sharpest knife in the drawer. It only took him 3 tries to cut his sliced bread this morning. Someone should just return his crayons and let him go back to playing in his corner at the "home".

i dont get it... he can frame the same shot on two cameras.. and that makes them equal???? lol and i loved his reference to "exotic" cameras. purely an idiotic statment, and what a bland shot to.... they arnt even exposed the same...
just furthers to prove what we all already knew. ken rockwell is an idiot.
"The 5D can get the same results, I just goofed on the exposure. This wasn't intentional, and emphasizes why the photographer is far more important than the camera." which pretty much nullifys the arguement that the A530 took the better photo....

thats the stupidest review he has done to date! of course youre going to have a $5000 5D if you add up the tripod and head, the L lens, the UV filter, the 4GB card (i assume its a 4GB card <$200). and to top it off, he GUESSES THAT HE MESSED UP THE EXPOSURE COMPENSATION on the 5D? cmon!

If you follow a few other threads (as I do) you might have noticed that there are quite a few photogs that have recently dropped their D80's for a 30D. As you know, one of our fellow participants here is called Nikonian - not anymore.

I've noticed this trend on a few other photo forums. Some pro Nikon users are being converted to the "Dark side " of Canon... Wonder why ;)

Then again I still own both

1. His oversaturized photos of street signs.
2. The way he tells everyone, everwhere to shoot in Program mode in JPEG cause the rest of it just isn't worthwhile.....

I'm undecided...

I'm not quite sure if he's really that stupid...or he's just seemingly not very good at writing an article.

I mean. Despite most ppl bashing him about his article title, most ppl would probably agree that at "normal" print sizes, there isn't that much difference between a 4mp image and a 12.8mp image. However, rather than making that simple point he compares a point and shoot to a 5D + lens.

*shrugs*

Pretty pointless exercise that. Asking people to compare two shots that have been radically optimised for the web (I doubt either roll-over image is more than 40k) - all he's done is degrade both to the same common demoninator and tell people there isn't a difference.

I beg to differ. Since I crop pictures of people in the ocean down below 4mp, print from 4x6 to 8.5X11 daily I can consider myself an expert on the above.

Yes, there is a difference Virginia. Does the average Joe care? No. Can they tell? Yes.

I sell my shots on sharpness, clarity, composition, colour etc. And fussy people can tell even with a couple drinks in them.

people will always try to stop you doing the right thing if it is unconventional

I think it's about priorites as well.. So, he tries to make a point that the uninformed viewer may not notice the difference.. But, as a photographer with even a bit of a trained eye.. How can he say that he doesn't think it's important to present the best product that you can?... So, a point and shoot can take a nice photo and a 5D does require some brain power and common sense in order to get the best results out of it.. There are a reason we're not all snapping away with point and shoots six inches in front of our faces.. His endless campaign that people don't need to invest their time to aquire basic knowledge, that gear is as inconsequential as the color of your socks, and everyone should ignore everybody but him is truly obnoxious.. I can't decide what I dislike more, his moronic statements designed to try to keep everyone at his level of ignorance or his disdain of any true photographers who actually have the talent and ability and do outshine him... Pathetic man!..

p.s. I kinda told myself I wouldn't go on another Rockwell tear.... I tried.. How long did I last?

How does a guy who advises people to shoot in P mode and in jpeg, exclaims such comments, "I've also found point-and-shoots to be better than the more expensive DSLRs at auto white balance!" manage to produce images like this:
