Hi
Just some pics from this sunday. Ive been shooting sunday league now for some 3 monthes getting loads of practice in, hoping one day i can find a outlet for the pics i take. The light was a bit hit and miss one minute it was bright then the clouds would come over then it was black. The light here in the uk is very low at this time and i find it a bit hard at times getting the exposure right
please let me have some c&c about eposure, framing ,content ect it all helps me no end.

thanks in advance chris

What does the guy in red have down his shorts in the first picture!! My girlfriend noticed over my shoulder, honest!

The first image is the best but I feel it is let down by not having the ball in frame. The last is also missing the ball.

Where do you normally sit whilst shooting?

For example look at this thread

https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=243502

great shots over there, and he is using same gears as you use including 400 f2.8, so i think if you got RAW files then you will have great results if you do some post processing on your photos.
don't think wrong, your shots are nice, but i feel it is not sharp crisp enough as other shots from other members.

Timing-wise you have some good images here - just try and include the ball wherever possible!!

I have to disagree with Tareq's comments about sharpness here.

I would suggest that if anything the photos feel over sharpened, the threshold and radius setting look as if they have been pushed too high on here. With a 1 series camera such as yours, on an in focus, razor sharp pic, you should fine that the optimal level of USM is 300, 0.4, 1 which is as recommended by Canon themselves. Be careful that you aren't trying to pull slightly soft pictures back into "focus" or sharpness by using USM. I always refer to a quote from the Sportsshooter website - "There is no such thing as "kinda sharp" or "pretty sharp" or "almost in focus". It's either IN or it's OUT." This is the basis upon which I edit my photos for the paper, unless its an absolute killer photo that tells a key news story of an event.

Focus/sharpness-wise, for me the best of the bunch is the last photo - there is sufficient pop from that photo without what appears to be overuse of the USM filter.

Use Gmen's images as a very good guide as to what to aim for, but also look at Joe Toth's, Marc Atkins', Markgardener's (apologies to anyone who I have missed, but it is late!) images too. Each one of them has a different style and you can learn from each!

As for RAW, yes, there are advantages to it, however, with a 1dmk2 and its file sizes you will find that it dramatically slows down your workflow. With the camera/kit that you have you should be able to nail things pretty well in JPEG.

Phew, sorry, have gone on a bit there!!

But hope that this helps. Keep at it though, the timing is there, just work on the PP and maybe the focussing. I like the initial images, so keep the work coming!!

Paul

thanks lads for getting back to me ill go through your comments one by one. i thought my self some of the shots i take lack high resolution this could be because im croping to much or as been said am i over sharping the images my usm is normaly 170 , 2 , 0 . Please note i shoot from the side line about level with the penalty spot and i can cover the midfield and attacking play from this point. My settings for my camera when i shoot are a1 servo , ap, and i let the camera focus at this time i dont select just the centre focus is this the best way to shoot. Ill also post a pic from a game that was last month this shot has been croped by just 15% of the total image size and sharpened to 300,04,1 do you think this shot is getting on the right track.

ps this last shot info : image resizes to 800 pix then converted for web use med setting hope this helps.

thanks again chris

I think that is the best of the pictures that you have posted so far - you have the ball in frame, a great backdrop too. Looking at your original USM settings I think they were probably a little high, however here, the sharpening is definitely more sympathetic and compliments the pic rather than over-powers it. So all in all a good improvement.

As for the resolution side of things, you probably hit the nail on the head with the over-cropping side of things I think.

I'll hold my hands up that I am not the most qualified here to talk about soccer as I don't get to cover it too often, however the position you take is one I use and find works well, especially with a 300mm lens and the coverage that gives. Camera settings are a personal thing, some people will use a centre point AF point, others will let the camera choose. On the 1d I would be inclined, as you do, to let the camera choose focus point. Other than that find what you are comfortable with and go from there.

Good improvement on the second post though - keep them coming.

yes i agree with Paul about an improvment i also agree about trying to make sure u keep the ball in the shot. I cant give u much advice on shooting football as its not in my line of expertise either just keep practicing & posting im sure if you read Gavin's guides it will help you a great deal.
Regards
Steve
