Focus Lock on the 30D

Is there anyother way to set focus lock on the 30D besides holding the shutter half way down? I have been playing around with getting my landscape photos sharper by focusing 1/3 into the scene and then recomposing but it is a bit awkward doing this on the tripod. Am I missing something?

You can set C.Fn. 4-1 (or 3) to assign focus lock to * button.
Meny people, including myself have that.

I don’t see how that’s gonna help you with DoF though..

Thanks. I must have missed that in the manual. Focus lock in the index does not reference to the custom functions.

I have been trying to read as many landscape photography tips as I can and the one common theme that I keep reading is to focus 1/3 of the way into a scene for maximum DOF

1/3 into the scene if you have set it to hyperfocal distance!
