I just recently bought a Canon 30D. I take photos in RAW and i often have to boost shadows in all my photos by around 6-7 points. Is there a custom function in the 30D where i can boost it up?

You need to explain a bit more....

What RAW converter are you using? What is your histogram showing? Is your monitor calibrated? Do you mean lighten or boost contrast? etc etc ;)

If shooting RAW there is nothing 'in camera' you can dso to affect this..

I'm using Adobe Photoshop CS2.

When i click on the auto-functions (just for test), all the RAW files need 6 point extra boost in shadow histogram.

When you say 'need' what do you mean? Do you mean to make it look good in your eyes or to ... what?

An example image pre and post adjustment would help greatly in any advice...

The point of shooting RAW is to not have to worry about any in-camera settings.

Increasing shadows effect can be very similar to increasing the contrast. Try it.

Do you mean boost shadow detail or boost shadow contrast? They are different, if not opposite.

In camera, shooting RAW, the only thing you can do is change the exposure compensation. Much better done in ACR.

If your pictures constantly need an exposure setting changed in RAW, then you need to work on getting the exposure closer in camera. RAW is not a panacea, and lifting shadows even in RAW by as much as I think you're describing can produce a lot of noise. You may need to think about 1) choosing scenes with lower contrast, or 2) changing your approach to metering.

But I hope you're not adjusting to the histogram as opposed to the picture.

Perhaps you could post an unadjusted image and a screen shot of the RAW histogram for us.

you can also save yr default settings in ACR so they are applied to every raw file you open.
