OK folks.. call it like it is :)

I am doing a little bit of research for a friend who wants a P&S and the SD800 IS is the front runner. I'm quite impressed by the camera.. but I wanted to get a feel from people who have actually owned and used this camera. So.. if you are an owner, or a user who has spent some time with it, let me know how you feel. Any and all opinions welcome.

(BTW - don't let my gearlist put you off. I own an A530 and I like it. :) )

I just got my wife the SD800 last week. It's an excellent P&S. She has a G3 and also borrowed my s230 a lot. She has never been interested in my SLR stuff. The IS in the 800 works fantastic. I favored either the SD700 or SD800, with the SD800 in the lead. I think the DIGIC 3 processor is well worth it. There is virtually no shutter lag. She always complained about the shutter lag in the G3 (she never called it that). The IS helps her get a lot more keepers. It takes great pictures without worrying about the technical stuff. She has the Canon CP-330 4x6 dye sub printer with the battery pack. The SD800 now does a great job of just printing the selected pic when you hit the print button on the back of the camera. I find it amazing that it's still the same size as my S230, pocket size. She really likes being able to just drop it in her purse and go. In fact, I think it's permanently there now. It does seem to do a good job with the face recognition. I doubt that she will ever test out some of the fancier features,
but it's also very good in it's basic operation. All in all, very pleased.

Excellent. I like the part about the minimal shutter lag, which has always bothered me and my guys. I went the DSLR route to fend that off, but of course, they are not willing to put up with the big gear to do that. My friend's quite an enthusiastic shooter with a good eye, very tech literate, but also does not want to worry too much about the underlying stuff. They're used to a Panasonic FX8, which I think is a fine camera, but Panasonic's rendition of blue skies has always struck me as strange, a bit tinted.. sort of with a magenta tint but I can't quite put my finger on it. None of the Canons have that issue, my blue skies (I LOVE blue skies) are rendered just the way I want all the way from the shutter button to the 8x12" print to hang. (IP6600D inkjet)

Thanks for your feedback.. other comments still welcome!
