Hi, I'm trying to find a good starter wide zoom lens for my 10D that's below $500. Does anyone have a suggestion? Thanks!

Sigma's 15-30 f/3.5-4.5 is a good one. Not ultrawide on the 10D, but doubtless wider than what you currently have (28-90 or so?). Just barely squeaks in under your $500 limit (at B&H, shipping extra).

Try also Sigma 17-70 f/2.8-4.5 Macro or Tamron 17-50 f/2.8. My Tamron should be here before Xmas. :yeah:

EDIT: Ooops, sorry I forgot that 10D won't accept reduced image circle lenses (EF-S type) like those I listed above.

The Sigma 15-30 is available in EX to LN condition for $399 to $469 at KEH.com If you don't mind buying a used lens.

Also the Tamron 11-18 is just about your budget at $519+shipping after rebate.

If you want ultrawide, the Tokina 12-24mm mates to it quite well, IMHO.

Did you lose Digital Photo Professional (DPP)? Get it here (external link). Cursing at your worse-than-a-map reflector? Check out this vid! (external link)

Yes it will. Just not EF-S specifically because of the bulge.

It is true that the 10D is not compatible with Canon EF-S lenses.

The 10D is not compatible with the EFS lenses although I have heard of people shaving tiny amounts off the back of the lenses to give the mirror enough clearance. It is not something I would try but it apparently has been done successfully. Here is a link to a page describing such a modification: http://members.cox.net …ller/EFS-WEB/EFS-WEB.html (external link)

Disclaimer: I take no responsibility for this unauthorized, warranty-voiding modification to your lens if you decide to do it.. :D

If you buy one of the nicer lenses, such as the 17-85 which is a personal favorite of mine, you can actually yank out the inner baffle and it'll mount on the 10D, no worries. In fact, it even mounts and shoots properly on the 1D (1.3X crop) except you get big fat black areas in the corners where the lens does not provide enough image area.

My lens is out of warranty (think it's 18 months old), but it can be nerve-wracking to do it to a new lens, I understand...

17-40 is nice too. Yields a 27-64mm zoom which is quite useful. No hackery needed and image quality is typical superb L quality.

Never forget...
ONLY Canon lenses have ultreasonic motors! (USM)
All the others are inferior and are slower to focus (hunting) and/or noisy.
Stick with canon...
Cheers

Not true. My fastest focusing lens is a Sigma. (Gear list in signature). Have fun.
