I shoot RAW only and have for a long time. I never feel deprived not having jpg's too. Only time I shift to jpg is to put a shot online. Anyone with decent eyesight can see the difference in IQ, as I did when I first started in RAW and shot RAW and large JPG, and the added flexibility on WB, etc is a massive benefit. Anyone wanting to stick to jpg then good luck to them (and there are sometimes very good reasons for some shooters) but anyone wanting superior IQ and flexibility then RAW is the way to go.

The article is very good and easy to understand. It is also copyright so I guess that is why it may not make 'sticky' status ;-)a

I always shoot RAW + small JPEG. When I convert my RAW files to JPEG, 99.9% of them look better than the ones that I shot orginally (small JPEG).

RAW > JPEG

But isn't that just beause you've shot a small jpeg? The jpeg from RAW would be a lot bigger.

I have been shooting Raw+Jpeg. It kind of gives the best of both worlds. I do not post process all my pics, but if there is one that stands out at least I have the RAW file to start with.

I tried shoting RAW and jpeg, and nearly had a heart attack when the frame counter told me I was getting 50 frames from a 1GB card! I did fill the card though before reverting to jpeg only.

So I assume the huge gobbets of information being hurled into the buffers are what lowers the burst rate before lock up? Is this where the higher read/write speed cards (ultra/extreme) come into their own?

Yeh I think you would notice a difference with a faster writing speed.

Strictly speaking, it's probably a violation of the copyright, but I would think that just using a link to the copyrighted material would keep you out of trouble. Another approach would be to ask the author for permission to copy it to this forum.

Yea, the downside to raw is that it takes up space. But memory cards are pretty cheap these days. There are quite a few places that have 2 gig cards for under $40.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.
