OK, here's the deal. I just got my Christmas bonus ($4000USD after *&%@#%#$ (INVALID EMAIL) taxes, ) and need your advice on how to best spend it. I take all types of photographs from sports to portraits to landscapes to Birds & wildlife. I have:

Canon 20D
580EX Flash
430EX flash
Smith-Victor KT900 Continuous Lighting Kit
Tokina 12-24mm
Canon 50mm 1.4
Canon 24-70 L
Canon 85mm 1.8
Canon 70-200mm 2.8 USM IS L
Canon 100-400mm 4.5-5.6 L
Canon 1.4X Teleconverter
Cheap Tripod
2 Canon Powershots
1 4GB Smartcard
1 2GB Smartcard
Backpack
External Shutter release
BG-E2 Grip
AC Adaptor
Sensor Cleaning Kit
Adobe Photoshop PS2
Neat Image Noise Reduction

My thoughts are to get:
300 2.8 L
OR
Save the money and add to it until I can afford a 500mm f4
OR
Be satisfied with what I have and give the 4K to my wife, who's been so patient and understanding with my hobby.

Any other ideas would be appreciated too.

Thanks in advance

the 300 2.8 is a fantasitic. will be great for sports and nature (especially with some TCs). the 500 F4 is my dream lens though, definitly fantastic for birds, but a bit too long for sports.

I've thought about the 5D, but I don't know that I'd really get a bang for my buck with it. I say that because the 20D has been able to do everything I've ask of it so far. Any limitations I've had were due to me and not the camera body. I'll look up the 5D again to see what it does that the 20D doesn't. Thanks for the idea.

As for the bonus amount, I do appreciate my company's appreciation of my work, but I do work pretty hard (and often) for them. Now on to the post of splitting the cash up with the wife, I may do that but more 70% to her and 30% for me. If I don't use it all, I'll probably just get a decent tripod and give the rest to her.

Have you considered the Sigma 300 2.8? Might be an option... or a SWEET MACBook Pro Laptop or a MAC Pro?

if hes going sigma he should definitly look at the 120-300 2.8. from everything ive read its as good in image quality as the 300 sigma prime, just happens to zoom . really wish canon made one with weather sealing and IS.

You know, I haven't even considered (until now) going any other way that Canon. That opens a new door for me, I think. At least worth researching. Thanks

Heck I think you already have a sweet kit! If it were me, I'd give half to the wife just cuz and buy a nice tripod and head, sell the 85 1.8 and get the 85 1.2! Or sell the 50 1.4 and get the 50 1.2.

I love spending someone else's money! Lol

I would get the 500L but that is just me. The 300 2.8 may be more useful on your 20D.

I think given you have a wife it may be nice to spend it together on home improvements or a jet away or something. However out of the lenses. Deffo the 300mm. If I was into motorsport which I am then I want the speed of a 2.8 lens and 500mm is abit too long for that really given a 1.4x will work great with it.
