Ask for an actuation count (the amount of shutter clicks). The 10D has a shutter cycle of 100K. A general replacement of a shutter will be about $250 dollars so take that into consideration.

If you buy from a dealer and get him to write the terms of the guarantee on the invoice.
If buying privateley then condition is all important. If it turns out to be 'well worn' when you get to see it just walk away - there are plenty around.
Brilliant camera - you will not be disapointed
Good luck

What would one expect to pay for one in excellent condition?

check adorama.com. I am shooting on a 10d and there is nothing I regret. Of course try to get the battery grip... It's a must. I found it on ebay.

500 bucks give or take some sounds reasonable. as mentioned above, if its worn, look for another. there are plenty of 10Ds in excellent shape out there.

Look locally for better prices. I picked one up in September for $400 on my local Craigslist site.

Keep an eye on the buy and sell board here and over at Fred Miranda. I picked up my 10D over on FM for $430 shipped - and it is in pristine shape.

The 10d is still a very competant camera:cool: I prefer it to my 20d as I believe it produces better images, I have both and almost always use the 10d in preference. Ok the 20d has "better" settings for those who think they need them, but ask them to give you a truthful answer to many times they have actually used the "better" settings available and you'll find most of them have not extracted that from the 20d.

The thing is with bodies, to treat them as a consumeable, expensive I know, but a new one comes along every year, to skip a generation is also a good idea, as invariably as above the new model does not give that much improvement, now if you were going from say a 10d to a 30d you would notice more improvement:cool:

As always there is the "must have" brigade who justify what they buy no matter what it takes, but most of them are wanna bee's;)

Agger has such a refreshing outlook on things - he actually does not need the latest and greatest for what he is shooting - I am in the exact same boat. I see no reason to move to a 20D or a 30D until I start "hitting the wall" with my 10D - that has not happened to date. I agree with him to - I think that the 10D still does have some advantges over even the 20D.
