what kind of laptop are you using? my (work provided) Dell D620 gets some hefty interference some time from the trackpad being used. if you like the simple free music sites, Pandora is really good too.

I have a D820. I haven't received interference from anything so far. And I know the sound card is good because I'm listening to a Mozart CD through Windows Media Player right now and it's almost like being at a symphony. All I did was set the EQ preset to "Classical" and it really brought the disk to life. I just want to do the same with Yahoo Messenger Radio if I can since that's my primary source.

Perhaps look into some m-audio devices?

One thing to note, your Sennheiser's require a lot of "burn-in" untill they are considered to sound their best. I think it's around a few hundred hours. Because of that, I'd recommend leaving them play continously for a few weeks. This is very specific to the HD280 pros.

Canon EOS 30D, Sigma 30 1.4, Sigma 10-20, Sigma 105 Macro, 135L, 430ex, Lowepro Mini Trekker AW, Manfrotto 3001pro w/486rc2 and 804rc2 head, Manfrotto 681 w/ 3232 head.

LOL no worries about the continuous burn-in. I have trouble taking them off! And what's an m-audio device?

Yep. I don't ONLY listen to Yahoo Radio but it's easier than filling my hard drive with mp3 files and paying the buck a download or whatever to boot.

And Yahoo radio isn't that bad. The quality is good if you pay the subscription for a year. It's not much different than getting satellite radio. It's just cheaper and internet based. It doesn't have EQ controls, that's all.

Since I have messenger going anyway, having the radio play through that is better, IMHO, than having yet another app going.

[Sid the Sloth - Ice Age] Are you mocking me?

:)

Seriously Yahoo Radio does sound like crap if you're too cheap to pay for it and they stick you with the low bandwidth service. You're also limited to so many hours a month anyway. But for 25-ish bucks a year you get high bandwidth CD quality (or pretty nearly so) and no limits on usage. I figure that's not bad at all since you can minimize messenger and just let it run in the background. If they gave you EQ controls it'd be even better.

M-audio is a company, they create soundcards, mics, speakers, etc. Check out their site.

Ah ok. I'll have a look when I'm ready to put together a desktop. I don't want to rip apart a brand new Dell and try to install a third party sound card. Besides, it's probably soldered in there anyway. Not exactly an easy swap like a desktop machine.

I thought you were gonna say m-audio is teen speak for mobile devices. I was expecting you to tell me I need an iPod.

No problem. I can see where you're coming from in saying I'm nuts to pay for high end 'phones and listen to crappy "grainy" low bandwidth music. That WOULD be dumb.

They have an amazing selection of rather popular external soundcards. For around $100 for a used one you could get pretty good quality.

yeah, i listen to streaming audio also. it's more spontaneous and you get to listen to stations all over the world.

i use winamp at home and work. it has a 10 band eq as well. still at home i find i use it flat because i'm getting enough out of the external sound card.

those other devices look interesting though. they look like they might potentially do a lot to reduce interference from the other electronics in the pc as they seem "external" so to speak.

BTW, have you considered satellie radio? I am sure you could get a subscription for one just online w/ no physical unit.
