Shockingly lazy I know however have a look at this link that I wrote a few weeks ago:

http://www.photography-on-the.net …php?p=2238385&postcount=4

This covered Mountain Biking, but the principles are similar.

Oh and sturdy waterproof shoes are a must for CC - always used to find that these events just attract water!!!

Specifically for CC, the running parts of the course sometimes make for some good images.

Anyway, hope that this helps - and sorry for the generic answer regurgitated from the previous post, however the two disclipines are almost identical!

Good luck and let us see the results!

I just did my first CC race this weekend (over +1500) and learned a whole bunch of things:

1. Get LOW and shoot up. This is the only way you'll be able to get the riders faces. Also helps with the backgrounds (Sky is better than the back of a overflowing dumpster)

2. Try to use flash. This really helps rider pop from the background and get enough light on the riders faces and eyes.

3. Try to get there early and walk the course. Since most CC races are multiple laps, you can shoot the start, rush over to a corner then rush over to the run-up, then rush over to the finish.

4. Try to find an inside position on a corner where the riders will be going right around you (but your off the course). This gets you right next to the riders as they go by.

5. Most CC races have a run-up (where riders dismount and run up the hill with their bikes). Get low on the ground and shoot up to get great facial expressions, especially after a few laps.

6. Always stay out of the way of the racers. It is the photographer's responsability to stay out of the riders way. Most bike races are pretty low-key and you have access to the whole course, so it is up to you to watch for riders when crossing or shooting.

7. Check your backgrounds, some of the best pictures I shot I ended up tossing because the background was an overflowing dumpster. (AGHHHH!)

8. Enjoy your self. I found the racers and organizers of the race all great people. Be prepred to give out business card with your site on it (if you have one, since riders always like pictures of themselves)

If you want to take a look at some of my CC pictures go to:

Most all the pictures are straight out of the camera (just resized for upload speed).

Also, be prepared to get dirty and damp, they race regardless of the weather (in fact they love the mud and rain)

You should enjoy it.
Rick
