do you mean a 30D?.. Maybe you should consider passing your 20D down to her and upgrading yourself.. But it's a great camera no reason you shouldn't pick one up.. besides, if my boyfriend were to buy me a camera i'd be over the moon.. Just remember to pick her up or pass down some necessary accesories.. nothing worse than having a camera but no lens or memory to go with it... and if she catches the photo bug it'll be a lot easier to get that 70-200...

D30 or 30D?

The D30 is really old and only 3 megapixels and SLOW. But depending on how cheap you get it, it maybe a great camera for a beginner.

If you found a D30 for a great price, I highly recommend it. It might be an older model...but it still takes great pictures and is certainly fine to learn on.

D30 (not 30D) $250 < 10,000 actuations

the reason why i want to get her a canon, is so she can use my lenses, cf cards, etc (we live together)

also i mostly shoot concerts which ='s low light. one negative i've read is the D30 is worse in low light settings. should this effect the decison?

thanks for your input.

Well, she won't be able to use the 18-55; the D30 won't accept the EF-S lens mounts. But the rest of your gear will work. For $1-200 more you might want to look for a Digital Rebel, which does accept EF-S lenses. 20Ds will run a fair bit more, but that's the first "mid-level" canon to accept the EF-S mount.

Also your EF-S 18-55 won't fit on the D30. And I would imagine the D30 is MUCH worse in low light settings. Not only focus speed but also High ISO performance.

You might be able to get a used original Digital Rebel for about the same price, but with a better sensor.

For $250 you aren't apt to find a super duper shiny new high ISO shooting wonder camera. Here is a review of the D30 (external link) that includes some sample images at ISO 1600....The images do have noise...but certainly could be cleaned up in NN or another noise program.

I think you are making a smart choice.. The 20D and 30D are going to continue to drop in value just as all the other bodies. She can print her 4x6 's all day long.. $250.00 is a good price!! ... You can get a D60 for about $100.00 more... You will have a backup body when needed too.

for that price you can find used rebels and even rebel xts... even the locked down rebel can outdo the d30 (though it's still same AF system, rebel does have twice the pixels, and with that you can print larger than 8x10 if the photo is good)

I don't hate macs or OSX, I hate people and statements that portray them as better than anything else. Macs are A solution, not THE solution. Get a good desktop i7 with Windows 7 and come tell me that sucks for photo or video editing.

If she ends up really enjoying this hobby, I'd fear printing out at 4x6 maybe 5x7 tops won't be fufilling. I'd also suggest a Rebel.

There's a handful of D30 owners in here who will argue that it's more than capable of 8 1/2 x 11... (myself included)

For handling/body/aesthetic's sake, I'd get the D30. I use a D30 as my backup to my 30D and would recommend it to anyone in the market.
