Anyone know of a 30D remote mod to include a focus button?

I would like to either make or modify a wired remote for my 30D that also has the equivelent of the half shutter focus as well as the shutter release.

I recall seeing something like this for the Digital Rebels but it did not indicate it was compatible and I'm unsure of the pin configuration in the 30D.

Anyone know of a mod or plans to build one from scratch. This type of wiring is simple stuff. I just need the specifications.

Ahaaaa! Thank you. I didn't realize but now that I am looking at the specs I see that is a built in function.

Does the plug and jack have 3 conductors. I would like to make an extension. The one Canon makes costs too much. I'll just lop off the plug, add an extension and splie the plug back on to the new cable.

You just need to remember that for the AF to function from the remote you need to set the camera (or should I see leave it set to) CF 4-0

It is a 3 conductor cable, I believe. I think I've seen instructions on the net as to how to set up an extension cord using ordinary 3.5 mm "stereo" headphone cable and connectors.

Before lopping of the plug of an expensive Canon remote, would it not be better to get one of the cheap clones of ebay to cut up.

Or pIck up a converter from B&H. Canon has T3-N3 converters and mini-stereo-T3 both.

I cut up my Canon one to serve THREE purposes:

1. Pocket Wizard Motor Drive Cable:
I converted the plug end into a Pocket Wizard motor drive cable by simply cutting the cable and adding male stereo headphone plug to the Camera end, and female to the remote end.

2. Wired Extension for the cable release:
Since we now have the male female connection of standard headphone jacks in the mix, all I need are standard headphone extension cables to make any length wired release I want.

3. Always On AF/AE Switch
The third option which I have not yet taken advantage of, is indeed to make a middle segment to go between the standard release or the PW and the Camera plug that will add the "second switch" seen on some 3rd party cables that allows leaving the "half press" of the shutter on at all times.

Well the only reason I was thinking of doing this is because the Canon branded specialty cables and adapters are very pricey and since I can by parts and construct high quality wiring myself for considerably less it sounded like a good idea.

Hey CyberDyne,

Can you elaborate or show some pictures. I'm not exactly sure what the mod you did actually is and how it works.

I just ordered this remote on ebay (external link) and would like to extend it primarily but am interested in the other uses you are describing. I should have the remote within a week at most.
