But mistakes do happen and I'd prefer to have some backup. I often will have 10 files open at once, and it is pretty easy to make a mistake if you are not ultra vigilant.

Either way, with a jpg PS doesn't protect anything. You can do a save (from a hot key) and you get no such dialog box. One can certainly have jpg masters.

Aperture also protects any master. You cannot overwrite those files with Aperture. Period.

They are two different programs - Photoshop and Aperture are mutually supportive.

Don't get me wrong - I don't dispute the fact that people can screw anything up if they try hard enough. And, I absolutely agree with your comments on JPEG. Where I took issue is that your initial response to my comments on PS not being able to update RAW image settings gave the impression that it could, but it really can't. Overlaying a RAW file with another type of file is a whole different ballgame.

BTW, Lightroom offers the same protection as Aperture from what I can see.

Amen to that!

Lightroom does the same thing but I find Aperture to be much more capable, have better editing capabilities, better UI, better search etc.... Lightroom performs better on older hardware.

I may never know since I don't have a Mac, but it may take some time before LR's true colors show as it is still in development. :)

i use Aperture for all of my photos, including scanned film. a small percentage of photos get round-tripped to CS2.

things i love in Aperture that Lightroom doesn't do: stacks, light table, proper versions, and i personally feel the meta data create/search/smart album is far better - for the time being. also the api set is quite cool. the Flickr plugin is a great example of streamlining the workflow process. i only wish they had more control over their own dot.mac export capabilities.

Quite honestly ZoomBrowser works well for a large percentage of my processing until you get into layering etc. - in which case CS2 seems to do well. The thing about ZoomBrowser is the simplicity and speed (and you can't beat the price either).
