Your manual is your greatest friend. Read each section and then go and shoot in that mode to find out how it works, you will soon get to know them all.
Keep the manual handy and refer to it whenever your not sure.

If any artist or workman wants to do well he/she has to start by learning all about the tools of the trade - in this case your camera.

Agreed, digital camera manuals can be heavy going if you are totally new to photography, so I first suggest you get and read a good book on digital photography that also covers the basics of photography in general.

The bottom line is that if you are not prepared to put some time into learning how to use it, you will likely never get the results your camera is capable of.
