Enjoy it brother! My first SLR just arrived the other day as well :) I'm not quite brave enough for "M" mode yet, been in Av mode myself....but yes, you will learn the most on M.

Let's see some shots!

Congrats! I'm holding onto my 350D until I can afford a full-frame DSLR. I also live in Gainesville, btw.

Manual mode is a good choice, especially wih a shoe mount flash. Depending on your lens, AV mode at the lowest aperture, ISO between 640 and 800, all the lights on will look pretty good without a flash, or pop-up compensated down 1 to 2 stops for a bit more light. Shooting in AV in low light is never a bad idea. You can always compensate exposure + or - up to 2 stops. Don't be scared to use a flash. Once you know how to bounce and compensate, most people would never be able to tell. I shoot manual with ISO 200, shutter speed at 1/200 and aperture at 2.8 and bounce my 580 off the ceiling or nearby wall. It's nice to set it once and focus on shooting! Congrats on the purchase, you've got yourself a great tool!

M mode makes you set everything but gives you no way of coordinating everything to componsate for a low f stop or too fast a shutter speed..etc,etc. I like to set it to Av and chose my apature for depth of field and lighting condition, then observe what shutter speed becomes available and get a feel for their relationships ....it will keep you in the ball park of good image quality as well as become a teacher....just my metheod,,,probably hundreds of different opinions on that!
