hey first of all. i'm very new to this photography scene. i've been messing around with stupid kodak digital cameras for almost 6 months now. . . nothing really serious - until i bought a new Canon Digital Rebel XTI on Black Friday. I decided to buy quality stuff :) Along with this, I also bought a 2GB memory card and a few batteries.

my main focus for photography as of now is cars, but i'm starting to get into landscape, scenery (same thing? :P), people, and nature.

i'd like to show you guys some of my work, but unfortunately i don't have a place to host them. anyone know where i can host images for free?

also i'm still figuring out my camera as well, and i have a few questions about it. when i'm doing night shots, more often than not my pictures turn out grainy. i have my iso set at 400 and no flash, and aperture priority as the mode. how can i fix this?

is there a proper way to resize images? what program would you guys recommend to use? i have adobe photoshop cs2 but i'm not sure if there's something better.

sorry if i posted in the wrong place, but i didn't know where else to put this. and seeing as i'll be in this section a lot, i decided i might as well say what's up :)

- jer

Hi and welcome to the forum.

I'll break down your post into sections to try and answer some of it.

Image hosting. There are a number of websites out there that offer free hosting with certain limitations. Try something like flikr to see if its what you're looking for.

Grainy Pics. This can be fixed in a number of ways. Higher ISO will produce more "noise" in the picture. There are a number of applications out there that will help to reduce it. Noise Ninja springs to mind.

Resize Images: Photoshop CS2 is the "dogs doodahs" as the saying goes and will do everything you'll ever want it to do for your pics, but owning a copy and knowing how to use it are two different things. Get yourself a book. There are a number of recommendations on this forum. A lot of users are using Photoshop Elements, aimed at the beginner.

What I would suggest is to use the search function to look up more info about the above points on this forum. There is a whole load of knowledge embedded in here from people having asked all sorts of questions over the last years, as well as more experienced members sharing the knowledge they have. There is a lot of reading to do, but then with any new hobby you'll want to know how to get the best out of the equipment you have.

Also.. this hobby can be expensive, and mistakes are easily made in buying the wrong equipment. Again, this forum has a lot of info from users own experiences.

Look forward to seeing your pics posted soon. :)

My Canon can.. I just need to find out how

Not bad. In situations like this (if this is the environment you plan to shoot) you'll need to learn about white balance and custom white balance if the xti has it (I think it does). Arena lighting can be all over the map as far as color temperature is concerned. As someone said, Photoshop Elements 5 has a very good color temperature slider that is very easy to use. It's about $100 and Christmas is coming.
Oh, White balance is what gives your photos the orange or blue cast.

It's a great hobby, and it makes you look at the World around you in a different, and better way.

BTW
Sounds like you have spent more hard earned cash on Photoshop CS2 than on the camera...Cough

And PS CS2 is worth every penny of it's cost.

Hey if your shooting cars under those 'yellow lamps' at night maybe a flash unit would help greatly?

I presume your shooting with the kit lens, maybe look at buying a 50mm f/1.8, cheap, sharp, fast and good for low light shooting.

For photo hosting, I use: http://xs.to/ (external link)

Signed up for free and they allow up to 500 photos of 2mb each.

Someone has a link in their signature about "don't be afraid to use high iso" I can't remember who or find the thread that it links to. Does anybody remember?

Basically most high ISO shots that have a lot of noise are under exposed to begin with. If you expose the shot correctly and then use a little noise reduction you can get great shots with ISO settings of 800 or higher.

this is exactly what i was looking at, although i can't find out where i can get it. i was looking at a 50mm f2.5 with macro, and it costs 300+ dollars! i was like whattt.

actually, my friend gave me cs2 for free. his parents got it for him but he never used it, and so i asked for it and he gave me everything. SCORE! :)

and about white balanace... everyone always tells me about it, and how i should understand to use it. i don't really notice a difference in most shots unless i use flash. am i doing something wrong?

thanks for the help guys :)

photobucket is a nice free site....i forget the limit with the free account but when i was using it i didn't have a problem uploading lots of photos...really user friendly for hosting too, because under each photo it lists the link to the photo with the img code already there...so all you have to do is copy paste to the forum...hope that made sense...give it a try, you'll see what i mean...

if you want a pay site, i use and suggest zenfolio. very professional looking and very user friendly with lots of great options. check my sig for promotion code as well if you want to sign up eventually (shameless plug :D )
