Canon Powershot S3 IS

I've noticed that pics taken of the kids in low light with a flash blows out the picture pretty badly. It's only affecting the pictures taken from about 2 to 3 feet away. Is this because the flash on this camera is to powerful for that close of a range? Should I have to avoid these shots or is there a problem with the camera?

Advice appreciated...

although I do not have an S3, the flash is too strong for a distance as close as that....you should be able to adjust the flash output to avoid this problem

Also, for a cheap diffuser, take a white paper/foam plate and cut a circle the exact size of your lens, and place it around the lens, in front of the flash.

You'll be amazed at the effectiveness, I use it on my s2 all the time, and lemme tell ya, it looks super sweet.

Interesting, I thought about using some wax paper but this idea is MUCH smarter and hands free!
