Anyone else up here in the northeast have any wind damage yet? The wind is blowing so hard right now that if I went out, it'd be hard to stand up/still. They say it's over 60mph now.

I went out to get in my Caddy a half hour ago or so, started going down the road and heard this *WHUMP* and looked back and my back window was all..ya know..crackley. So I got out and looked, and my little car phone antenna had been knocked back by the wind so hard, that it broke the window. The two "bumpy" parts of the antenna have impact points on the glass right below where they touch when I fold it down.

I'm depressed. I can't drive my car for a while, and it's gonna be pricey indeed. I don't believe it's covered..."act of god" and all.

You don't have full glass coverage? Only costs a buck or two extra a year.

I just got off the phone with the insurance company. This is funny. I should have had it, Dan, yes. I was sure I did, too. Progressive says that since they didn't receive my photo inspection of my car (yes, that's right- the insurance carrier should come and do that- they always have), they were forced to drop my collision, ____, and glass (don't remember the second). So, just in time, I seem to only have liability. It's my mom's policy. She's awful upset. Luckily, the window is only about $315 in the mean time. I can definitely cover that. I'm happy, mad, and sad, all at the same time.

I can't believe that the car phone antenna would break a window with a 60 mph wind. I've had my car over 110 and the antenna was still up. More likely, something blew into your path taking out the antenna and breaking the window. Bottom line though is busted window... bummer.

It's one of those antennas that can be pointed forward or back at any degree, though. It was pointed slightly forward. It's not a stiff stationary antenna like on most cars. Plus, I was going around 50mph into the wind, and then that noise I heard was a strange, stronger gust of wind toward the car from the front. It was obviously the antenna.

YIKES!!! Your right, no doubt that that tiny little ball did the damage. Maybe you hit a micro burst or something. Wind in those can be significantly more than the ambient wind, even during a wind storm. Either way, something was packing a lot of energy.

Actually....rescue people use antennas all the time to break windows on cars. The side and rear windows in the US must be made of tempered safety glass...hit it with a large blunt object and it just bounces off...hit it with something very small and it shatters easily. It is pretty amazing how hard you can clobber a window with a baseball bat and have nothing happen....then turn around and hit it with an antenna or even a wire coat hanger and see how easy it is to break one.

So when are they coming to do your photo inspection Ron?

 LOL...sometime after monday, when I call and make sure there's full coverage, like I was sure there was the whole time. They're gonna lie and say they sent me notices, which they haven't. I'll end up paying for the window anyway, so whatever. Raaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrr. :|
