Great work Gavin.

Do you usually sit on the goal line?

Darren

Cheers Darren... not usually.... but the 'bright' patch at Layer Road is in one corner of the pitch so I plumped for a behind the goal spot this time.

Another couple of questions for you Gavin if you don't mind.

What is your method for determining which players were involved in a challenge, goal, tackle etc? Do you do you have a good memory of the players faces, have a thumbnails database you can browse through for faces (I'm trying to create one for my local sides), try and grab their shirt #.

Do you tag images in camera to speed up the selection process?

A rather inquisitive Darren

Cracking shots, even in those conditions. Looks like they made a good set for the newspaper.

A combination of notebook/pen, memory/experience and the voice tag facility on the 1-series bodies...

...and, yep, with live pics you have no choice but to tag pics as you go.

Questions:

1- Do you use One-shot AF or AI Servo AF mode?

2- Do you use Low-speed or High-speed continuous Drive mode?

3- Can you tell me what CF.4 is and CF.18 is in your camera?

4- You prefer to use full Manual or you use Tv sometimes or Av?

5- Do you crop your original shots or it is cropped due to focal length (300+) or you try to get cropped by changing your distance if possible?

Sorry for all these questions but i will try someday to go for sports photography and i want to know what most settings that photographers are using, don't worry about shutter speed or ISO or Aperture, just i am confusing with white balance or modes in camera.

Cheers Dwight! It had to be done... and a third body might open up some remote options. The bigger screen also makes chimping an even greater pleasure.

Apologies for not replying to your e-mail as yet... my only excuse is (the usual) lack of time  ... and I'd like to reply with some sensible ideas/recommendations rather than hurried wafflings.

Jubbloids.

Hi Tareq... it might be worth having a look at my Q&A thread... you'll find answers to these questions and some more info there as well:

Well, plans for the vacation may have changed again based on some observations by another POTNer in the mother country.

I have just posted some boxing with a bit more to come.

Yes, the 'N' bodies have much better visual ergonomics.

Gavin,

Just curious, how did your shots end up in the Daily Record - did they come you you or search your Photoshelter archives, or was it through an agency? Every time I visit the in-laws north of the border they don't have the slightest interest in anything from down south other than the big Premiership teams:)

Hi Chris,

The pics went out to the Daily Mirror (who cropped the penalty pic down to Iwelumo's head ). However, the Record (being the Scottish version of the Mirror) ran a special feature on Iwelumo (who is possibly in line for a call up to the Scottish national team), hence they ended up north of the border.

That makes sense - I didn't realise he was Scottish. With Parkinson being sacked today you may get some interest in the shots of him too.
