I had a bad photospot this time, right behind the corner post and next to the door. But I got a few good shots. Enjoy!

I may be shooting some MMA in the future and would appreciate a little more monologue about the event location/venue, fighters, and event. Also, attached images don't contain EXIF so settings and commentary on the lighting issues would be nice, too. :-)

I shoot for a couple of magazines so I get media credentials. I'm kind of spoiled actually since I basically have one of the best seats in the house!

The event was held at the Arco arena in Sacramento CA. The two headlining fights were Matt Hughes Vs. Georges St. Pierre for the Welterweight title and Tim Sylvia Vs. Jeff Monson for the Heavyweight title.

The lighting is generally really good and evenly lit since the fights are on PPV. The biggest challenge for Octagon side photo is shooting through the cage. I shoot a 70-200 2.8 IS at mostly 2.8 or 3.2 so I can get the highest shutter speed possible (sometimes 1/400th at ISO 1250). Also the shallow depth of field helps eliminate the cage. But this makes focusing on the fighters extemely difficult. Unfortunately, at certain angles, the shiny surface of the fens is hard to get ride of. As I mentioned above, the position I had was one of the worst octagonside posittions because I was directly in front of of the corner pieces and the gate was attached there further creating more obstructions. I shot a lot of photos but only a few are worth showing.
The images don't have any EXIF data but if you look at the gallery link above, the EXIF data is available on my smugmug page. There are a few other events posted there as well.

You got some great shots. Looks a little better than the last event you showed us pictures of. How much of a difference did the new camera make?

Id really LOVE to shoot a UFC or Pride event one day.

Dwight, will you be doing local MMA events, or big events? I think California now has the most MMA promotions/events in the world now, so a lot of the sport shooters may want to pay a little more attention to MMA.
