350D manual mode problem

Hi,

I've got a 350D and have had it about a year. Last month i had a problem which meant that the only manual modes i could use were AV, M and A-Dep. This problem occured when i was using my speedlite 430ex (i think it had something to do with it, it could have just been a coincidence).

Yesterday whilst at a friends i had the exact same problem, i decided to change the ISO whilst in P and it wouldnt let me, i then had a look about and it had done what it did before.

Last time i've got no idea how it rectified this problem, i dont know if i did anything or if it just fixed itself.

Now i'm left a bit confused and unable to fix it - having to shoot everything fully auto or fully manual is a bit annoying at times.

So, any suggestions? Hints? Tips?

Cheers guys

right, just so people know, i've tried updating the firmware. I've cleaned the connectors. I've tried 4 lenses.

I think i'll have to call canon on monday.

Your not making a lot of sense?

What exactly is the problem, because it looks like several different ones?

I cant see that i'm not making it clear BUT

When i turn the camera on, when i select any of the creative modes except AV, M and A-Dep, the camera runs in fully auto mode (green square).

I cant select ISO in "P" mode etc.

other people have suggested a "hard reset", i've got no idea how to do this, i've cleared all the settings and re loaded the firmware.

Trouble shooting is all about details.

So far we have very few details and a contradiction.
In your first post you state the only creative modes you can use are AV, M and A-Dep, but in your second post you state that they work as if the camera was stuck in full Auto mode (green box), implying you can't use them.

You also stated you had exactly the same problem on a second occasion, but went on to describe it as being a problem with selecting ISO in P mode.
Although on further reading I take it to mean you experienced the same problem again, and you also experienced a problem selecting ISO.

If English is your second language we can be patient and work through it.
If not, then you need to write clear concise sentences detailing your problems.

Cheers Moppie, I understand that you are trying to help me out. English is my first language but unfortunately camera talk or describing a fault with a camera is not.

I'll attempt to make it clear exactly what my problem is.

On two seperate occasions my camera has seemed to loose the ability to shoot in "P" and "Tv". When i select either of these modes the camea does not seem to notice that i have selected them and will shoot as if i have selected fully auto (green square).

The reason i mentioned the ISO was that it was not being able to select an iso whilst in P that made me realise there was a problem. Meaning, i was using the camera fine, in P mode and then all of a sudden i could not change the ISO and i realised that the camera was acting as if in fully auto, it wouldnt let me manually decide if i wanted the flash nor would it allow multi shot mode.

Both occasions when the camera has done this have been whilst using my Speedlite 430ex. I do not know if this has any relavance or if it is just a coincidence.

If what i have said is still not enough, i do not know how to explain it better.

P mode & Tv mode act as if they are Fully auto. Even via usb cable and remote shoot the pc shows the green square for what i have selected. it is as if the dial is not working correctly.

Also, the last time it happened, the problem seemed to rectify itself. Its now been 3 days and its still doing it.

It sounds like it may need to be turned in for service if this happens regularly. I've not heard of this problem before.

Well, its only happened twice, but i suppose 2 times in just over a month is a lot.

Its quite irritating too as its only just over a year old.

No worries, Iv been trouble shooting on forums for a long time, and while I don't know a lot about cameras, I know that the people who do know a lot, need to know as much information in as detailed a format as possible. :)

I would suggest you work your way through all the cameras modes, with, and with out the flash.
If they 430 is attached then it will override the onboard flash, and of course will always fire if its turned on (I don't think the 350D has a custom function to active the 430, but not fire its flash).

By behaving in Green box mode, I assume you mean the list of options in the function menu was the same limited set you get in Green box mode? Not the extra ones avliable in P, Tv, etc...

I guess its possible either the mode dail on your camera is mal-functioning, or something is wrong with the hot shoe, so when a flash is attached it causes a problem with chaning modes.

You need to test the camera in all modes, with and with out the flash so see if it occurs again.
