I was at a National Wildlife Refuge today and saw this immature bald eagle (3 year old?). He flew out of the tree and 3 Northern Harriers (I've never seen 3 together before) started harassing him. Unfortunately, I didn't get any decent shots of that (it was pretty far away), but I'll post one where you can at least see one of the Harriers.

I would say he is still in his first year. Keep going back if you want closer shots. He will be around.

Nice catch. I wish I knew more about these eagles. How do you tell how old the juvies are? I know they get the white head at 5, but the rest is a mystery to me. :)

Thanks for the comments everyone.

Canonloader, you can tell by their color. I'm not expert (not even close). They have very distinct patters that develop as they age. The white head is the last thing to develop as they mature (I believe).

Love all these birds...even the pesky harriers. Is this from the WFinley batch?

(I was looking for your shots from there :) ).

No, these are from Ankeny (Saturday). I don't have a bunch of other shots up yet. I'll get some posted soon.

Thanks for looking!
