Hello, im Luann. Just found this site and decided to check it out :) I am also new to **photography** I love to take it, but have to learn how to use my camera and take good shots. Anyone have any recomendations on how to start to *learn* the *proper* way to shoot? I will be taking a few night courses this upcomming year.. Just wanted to get input on what kind of photography is the easiest to start out with, Eventually in the far future I would like to be able to shoot weddings, until then however........

Welcome, Luann! First of all, there are some questions to answer. What gear are you using now, or want to use in the future? What kinds of things do you shoot?

A good way to start is to get a wonderful book, and I recommend "Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Peterson. This is a good tutorial type book you can learn from right away. Taking courses will definitely help you, but don't be surprised if you get some reactions from people here about starting to go pro. Some of us are starting to go pro after many years of doing this as a hobby. I recommend you go slow and learn the whole business. If you have natural talent, that's great, but also you need to learn the business side of photography. Then the most important thing is to actually go out there and shoot a ton. That's how you learn. Post some pictures here and people can help you. Good luck!

Welcome to POTN. I was in your position not to long ago and this forum proved to be the best learning tool around. The only thing I can suggest is to read as much as possible, take a lot of pictures and ask questions about what you cannot figure out through expirimenting. Enjoy it all.

Thanks for the welcome reply.. asa I figure out how to post photos I surely will post a few of my favs. I am young, I do not plan on going *pro* in the near future, I am however going to shoot a coworkers wedding on the beach this spring.. It will not be a big wedding, more of a gathering of very close relatives and me :) no reception afterwards just dinner. She was not going to have anyone shoot any photos but I told her I would since I love to take photos.. anyhows right now I have the Canon 20d with a 28/135 ultrasonic lens. and the 18/55 lens it came with and just today I purchased a speedlight 430ex WHICH will not charge to my cam or test flash..go figure  I have four children, a dog and a cat they are basically my models they are who I take photos of, outside and inside and I have taken a few good shots of *nature* Theres just soo much to learn and so much different types of photography. I would like how to learn to take good macro photos...they are stunning. anyhows i am going to attempt to try to figure out how to post a few photos...

Hmm, strange..
It’s been recommended to newbie’s here quite often.

Your best bet for posting pictures is to use a image hosting site. There are some free ones and some pay ones. Photobucket (external link) is a free one that I am told is pretty good, and my personal favorite is Smugmug (external link) but it is a pay site. You can then use the "

Content warning: NOT AN IMAGE
" tag in your posts and put the url of the picture you want in between. If you need help, pm me and I can give you a hand.

Edit: I was way to slow. The tutorial above is good.

Ditto... read and take lots of pics. When they don't work, take a little time to figure out why. Look at some of the galleries and read... read... read. Don't be afraid to experiment and try stuff. It just bits after all and if the pic just doesn't work, don't be afraid to toss it and try again.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

Only when you copy/paste it into address window, and the image is too small..

Hello Luann
I have just purchased the book that Suzie mentioned to you. The one thing that struck me so far with this good book is the fact that we can be content by just going out there and taking properly exposed pictures (tack sharp) or we can go out there and be creative with various combinations of exposure that are at our disposal with our cameras. I for one believe we all would like to come away with a tack sharp well composed photograph as a goal in any case because there are so many wonderful things out there to capture in those subjects that interest us what ever that may be. On the other hand we can also not limit ourselves to just properly exposed photographs, but be creative and find uniqueness with our camera skiils and eventually taking it beyond just proper exposure. Most of us would probably be just satisfied with tack sharp photos of what ever interest us
if you just want to take pictures or snap shots of the kids and family pets then go out and buy a point and shoot and have a ball, but if you want to go for the touch down then learn from books like these and practise, practise, practise.

John

Nope, never went on that one, but just got this one from my 5D stuff:

I'm sure people have recommended this one, but I never went on it until I got the little form. It's a nice site as well. I just like books. That way I can carry them around and read when I have time. I also take my manuals with me when I know I have a wait somewhere.
