Will it flash if you press the pilot button?

The flash doesn't charge on the camera. You have to put batteries in it.:D

In the creative zones the camera will not 'see' the flash. P mode will react to the flash. Av, Tv, M do not see the flash. They still just measure ambient light and react to that.

The camera sees the flash in all modes. It just changes it's behaviour in those modes, but it will fire a flash (if it's on ;)). To fully understand the EOS flash system, you should read the EOS Flash bible (look in the sticky FAQ in the flash section).

You are correct, the camera 'sees' the flash. It just gives no indication exposure wise that the flash is there which is what my comment was about.

You may want to make sure your batteries are in properly (it's easy to get them in backwards, I've done it plenty of times). If that doesn't work, maybe try some different batteries. If all else fails, I would say you have a defective flash.

As jra says. If you've replaced the batteries with new ones and sure they're installed correctly and the pilot does not light either on or off the camera then you've got a bad unit.
