Hello, I have just purchased the 30D and have been reading forums all over the net, then stumbled upon this one, so signed up :)
What is all this talk about a 1.6 crop ?
what exactly does it mean.
Thanks

Welcome, and congrats on getting a great camera.

Your question comes up quite a bit, such as in this thread, so I won't offer much detail here. Briefly, the crop factor indicates that a lens on your camera has the same field of view as a lens with 1.6 times that focal length on a traditional 35mm film camera -- or a "full frame" digital SLR. With some numbers: a 50mm lens on your camera is much like an 80mm lens on a full-frame camera.

You will like it here, as these members want to help you out, and this is not a forum where people try to "outsmart" other members.

Hello again, after much arguing and glares etc, I have had to wrap my new 30D up for xmas :(
So will spend the next few weeks dreaming of it and learning about it.
I remember this feeling when I bought my T9o many moons ago :)
I have one question to ask at this moment.......
Do I go with the software on the cd's or use stand alone ones ???

thanks

The software on the CDs are actually pretty good and will work just fine for you until you have a better foundation with the camera. I got to say though, I think you screwed your self by playing with the camera then have to wrap it up for a few weeks (ouch). That got to hurt and is going to be agonizing until that magic day when you get to open it up (if you make it that far). One thing is for sure either way, you know Christmas is going to be awesome :) Happy Holidays.

Thanks yosemite :) The banter my partner and I have is quite good, I have just told her what you wrote and she smiled and winked, then looked at the box on the sofa that she still has not removed for wrapping ( sick sense of humour) but I am sure the next few weeks of browsing these forums will endeavour to heighten the pleasure of opening the box again.
I will install the software from the cd and suck it and see.
