Okay, I love having a P&S to grab and take with me when I do not want or need the DSLR with me. My S50 just quit working so I am looking around at what is available. I see that the A640 is failry reasonable and has good specs. Anyone have one and can give me some impressions, good or bad? Thanks.

Not the 640, but I've been very happy with the predecessor A80 and A620. The A620's still out there and at 7 MP is still ample for most purposes.

The 630 and 640 are pretty impressive. What the 640 has over the 630 is more MP, its black and a few extra features like remote capture. These things may or may not be important to you. I would have bought one of these over the A540 but the wife wanted something more compact.

60D, Canon 18-135 IS, Sigma 10-20 hsm, 24-70 2.8 hsm, 70-200 2.8 hsm, 430EX II, and all the other stuff that goes along with it.

Thanks for the input. I think I will go ahead and buy one. It looks like the best bet to me in that price range and size.

I just bought a Canon PowerShot A640 as a replacement for my G3 and I'm more than happy with it. I only miss the RAW support. All other features are simply wonderful! 100% RECOMMENDED!!

My first post.
I have nothing bad to say about the A640. My wife and I have had it for a couple weeks now and we are happy with it. We use it to take snap shots of the kids. I have noticed that the red eye is somewhat of a problem indoors. We did buy a couple one gig sd cards for it since we like the big clear pictures. It does take wonderful pictures. I am more of a point and shoot guy so I havnt even begain to use most the features on this camera. One thing even with all the features this camera has it is very easy to use. I am glad I bought it and now that I have it I wouldnt want any other camera.

I just got one about a week ago. I'm having a blast with it already snap about 77 pics of the family. Quality is great. Redeye is a bit of a problem. anyone know how I can minimize redeye.

Redeye? You can't move the flash further away from the camera. Have you turned on Red Eye Reduction? You'll need to allow time for the camera to pre-flash with that, but it'll help reduce red-eye. There's also the idea of having your subjects loo away from directly at the camera, but if they're looking far enough away that there's no possibility of red-eye reflections, you won't be able to see their eyes.

Hi! I have the A630 so very similar. If I was just going to be doing point and shoot, i'd take the SD over the A. Hope this helps in some way.
