I've P.O.T.N.'d just about everywhere in my house except for one place... on the toilet!

And I'm feelin' experimental tonight!

I have wired almost every room in the house except that one. We are talking about remodeling and I want to build in a data center for the throne. I mean, think of the possibilities, I can drop two pieces of sh*t at the same time. :o:D

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

When my house was being built I ran over 2000 feet of Cat5. I had to be talked out of wiring the bathrooms.:D I still don't understand why! That's where I do my best [th]inking!

I surf POTN in my kitchen/dining/living area. There is no TV in this room because we didn't want to clutter up the loungeroom with two full computer systems. There's only the kids POS PC in there and no internet connection on it. Considering running some cat5 to it and networking it from my PC so I can surf and watch telly at the same time.

You can get that new-fangled wireless thingy now you know :-)

I just use my PC in the office/extension area of our living room - I can still see the TV and (unfortunately) hear, and speak to the wife

In the summer I have used my laptop in the garden.

I used to access it at work but the little ba*tards in IT decided to block it - Maybe 'someone' was visiting it too much

Computers? Wireless? Tell me more of this sorcery! :D

This was about two and a half years ago and I debated long and hard about whether I should install something that was rapidly becoming obsolete. But!... I was given about 3-1/2 boxes of 1000 feet of CAT-5, and several boxes of coaxial cable so all it really cost me was about a day of labor (by my son & myself). It might be a lot of wiring in the walls but I decided "It ain't eatin' any hay" so what the heck? Plus I knew it would be a lot easier to do it with the house under construction than to change my mind later and try to add it.

Now I've got two ethernet ports, two phone ports & two coaxial connections in every room in the house (except the "library" as I mentioned before). I do use my laptop wirelessly but everyone else in the family has a desktop connected to one of the ethernet ports. I'm glad I did it.

...

Wireless is still too slow. Maybe when 802.11n comes out next year boosting throughput to 200mb. Right now, all 6 of our PCs are 100mbit capable and two now are giga-bit capable. I am looking at upgrading our house switch to a giga-port switch as I am putting together a household music/video/picture server and keep just small local storage on all of our PCs. Also, there is a security issue. Yes, you can make wireless secure, but it takes effort. I am concerned that the kid across the street can access my network as you don’t need physical connectivity. I know lots of neighbors with wireless networks. I can see their carrier and sometimes I wonder how security conscious they are. How many of them actually change their SSID to something other then linksys or tsunami? Or how many set their networks in open authentication mode. Or how many keep their administration accounts set to admin/admin? I’ll stick to hardwired for a bit longer and let wireless technology catch up. ;)

I'm running a Belkin G+ and I can't tell the difference in speed between wired and wireless.

But that's mostly because Comcast sucks. I pay $45 a month to get a whopping 45MBPS transfer service.

I don't think you'll notice that big of a difference with any web page as even 802.11b is capable of sustaining a data rate of 6 m-bits and peaks of 11 m-bits. Where I really notice it is on data transfer between PCs. I have a small server which I store all my pics on. I am in the process of scanning all my old photos and these files are over a gig in size before I break them up. With 802.11g being able to sustain about 25 m-bits, add on a couple of kids playing an online game and a wife u-tubing some little clip and all of a sudden I get only a fraction of that 25-mbits. Hardwired switching give me the full 100 m-bit all the time.
