This lens wouldn't be a bad choice. It's not the sharpest lens in my bag (my EF 50mm f/1.4 is the sharpest, even sharper than the 100mm Macro!) but it's decent. It is fine in the center, but a little soft in the corners. It's served me well for many years. I've read that the new 24mm f/2.8 IS is a little sharper, and it is the same compact size. This lens is very handy to keep in a pocket when you go out and you think you might want to take some photos, but the intention of the trip is not photography. This lens and my 50mm f/1.4 are a good team in that respect.
