I shot a boxing card at the Chumash Casino Resort on Friday night. It was produced by Gary Shaw Productions (external link) and the two main events were televised by ShoBox: The New Generation. As a warm up for the crowd and a major learning experience for the amateurs, Gary Shaw Productions in conjunction with Willie Flores, who runs the Santa Maria, California, PAL Boxing Program and Santa Maria Boxing, arranged two amateur exhibitions. The first was between two very impressive young women. I have a tiny bit of information about Jenny (blue trunks) as I have a relationship with Willie, her coach. She is the mother of five (5) and works as a school bus driver. So, with no further interruptions: boxing!

#1 Both women threw very heavy punches.

#3 Sometimes they threw them at the same time.

#4 And sometimes not!

#5 Sometimes neither fighter connected ... or both!

#6 This is Willie Flores, retired corrections officer and lifetime boxing coach who donates huge amounts of time to work with the youth of Santa Maria, California, along with Jenny Gomez, mother.

#7 Jenny and Arlene ... two gorgeous women that you wouldn't want to meet in a dark alley!

#8 And one from the Eye-in-the-Sky!

Just got a note back from editor of the Valley Living section of our local paper (Valley refers to the Santa Ynez Valley, over the hill from Santa Barbara city) to whom I suggested a feature on Jenny. She asked how her kids deal with discipline, "How could you ever disobey a mom that hits other people for exercise!?" When I see her again I will have to ask!

a very whole hearted effort of the two ladies to deliver a good presentation of the sport of boxing.

I think a thoroughly coached sports regimen should be in order for many kids...nothing wrong with that...That will be a real cool feature on Jenny...Would love to get a link to it some day...

Absolutely, John ... these two punched harder and worked harder than the last two women professional boxers I shot who would land about fives punches apiece in the first 15 seconds of each round. The amateurs only do three short 1 minute rounds, but they are power packed ... on my website I have a gallery of the two amateur guys ... they started each round punching from the bell and didn't stop until the next bell! I am holding off doing a thread here until I have their names.

It reminds me of the Olympic trials and the few minutes each boxer has to show their stuff...

The lighter weight classes are fierce and super fast...

Looking forward to that particular posting...

Thanks, again, John. I need to call Willie for those names. You can see the gallery on my website along with more images than I have been able to display here for some of the bouts.

Marcela Toledo, reporter for El Tiempo who first introduced me to Willie Flores, just sent me this link (external link) to the article she wrote about Jenny Gomez.

Are you the Arlene in the images? If so, absolutely as you surely worked for them. If not, could you explain your interest?

Nice pics and timing. #6 is really nice and sharp!

Btw, that ref is one of the worst I've seen. I've seen him do a few MMA shows. He's not popular with the crowd.

Thank you ... I get well paid to shoot these fights! :-)

That's the only time I have seen that Ref at the Chumash Casino Resort.

Great job of working with the light truss in #1 Dwayne. Nice series.
