How do rebates work? Does Canon just decide "Hey, we'll send out rebates for the 30D this month" and then you prove that you have a 30D and they give you some money back or does it come with the camera in the box?

You have to buy the item during the specified rebate period.

And be careful to follow the instruction carefully. You'll need upc symbols, receipts, etc.

Canon's rebate program is IMHO Canon's weakest link. I bought 4 items last spring during their rebate program. As it stands today, I have finally received three of the rebates, this after many phone calls to keep the process moving. The fourth I am calling a loss as I am unable to get any traction on that one. Luckily it was for only $15.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.

Yup!
Purchase your item within their given time period
Read the rebate instructions CAREFULLY (the fine print esp)
Make Copies of EVERYTHING you need to send (theyll probably ask for originals)
Follow ALL steps
They are usually good about sending rebate within 6-8 weeks, but sometimes it takes longer. Make notes of any telephone numbers and/or websites you can check the status of the rebate.
Ive never gotten a rebate from them, but have friends who have...
